Music-industry bible Billboard took the opportunity this week to comb through its chart records and compile the top 25 Country artists of the past 25 years--and who do you think is topping the list? Nope, it's not Garth Brooks, who I would say is a more than reasonable guess. However, Garth landed at No. 2, falling short only to George Strait.

Country music all sounds the same. Modern rock pretty much does too.
It is interesting how current country music sounds more like 80s pop rock and 70s Eagles styled Rock sounds far more country.
One of the only places you hear the cliched version of the guitar solo (that became popular mainly after Eddie Van Halen’s turn on Beat It)...though very generic and downscaled...is some current country songs.
Garth Brooks’ music does not hold up very well considering how ridiculously popular he was.
There’s only one equal to King George and that’s “my fiance’” Alan Jackson....I love, love, love him......I’ve seen GS at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo many times and he’s great but I still think AJ is the better performer!
But Brooks left music in 2001 while Strait has stayed active. George is a sweeter more humble guy, but Brooks is sure a super entertainer.
I will agree.
Erika Chambers is pretty good on the fiddle as well.
Amarillo By Mornin' Up from San Antone Everything that I got Is just what I've got on. When that sun is high in that Texas sky, I'll be buckin' at the county fair. Amarillo By Mornin' Amarillo I'll be there. They took my saddle in Houston, Broke my leg in Santa Fe. Lost my wife and a girlfriend, Somewhere along the way. I'll be lookin' for eight When they pull that gate And I hope that judge ain't blind. Amarillo By Mornin' Amarillo's on my mind. Amarillo By Mornin' Up from San Antone Everything that I got Is just what I've got on. I ain't got a dime, But what I got is mine. I ain't rich, but Lord I'm free. Amarillo By Mornin' Amarillo's Where I'll Be. Amarillo By Mornin' Amarillo's Where I'll Be.
Oh man, thanks for posting that pix.....he’s one of the ones that makes a tshirt I have (Cowboys Butts Make Me Nuts) so truuuuuuueeeeee!!!!!
Hank Jr. 13th hmmm..
;-)
His DaDDy was #1 and still is..
George Strait big time. Go back and listen to Bob Wills songs and there is a lot of the Texas Playboys style in George’s music.
“80 proof bottle of tear stopper”.
Don’t forget “Texas”
There wouldn’t be no Alamo,
No Cowboys in the Superbowl:
No “Lonesome Dove”, no “Yellow Rose”,
If it wasn’t for Texas.
I wouldn’t be a Willie fan.
Nobody’d swim the Rio Grande.
I wouldn’t be an American,
If it wasn’t for Texas.
Fort Worth would never cross my mind,
And there’d be no Austin City limits sign.
No Lonestar of any kind.
If it wasn’t for Texas.
I’d never’ve gone to Tennessee,
To sing my songs an’ chase my dreams.
Only Heaven knows just where I’d be,
If it wasn’t for Texas.
Fort Worth would never cross my mind.
There’d be no Austin City limits sign.
No Lonestar of any kind.
If it wasn’t for Texas.
It made me the man I am:
Thank God for my old stompin’ ground.
I wouldn’t be standin’ right here, right now,
If it wasn’t for Texas.
If it wasn’t for Texas.
If it wasn’t for Texas.
Yep, definitely some Bob Wills influence.
That deep voice of Josh Turner just melts my butter too.
Gratuitous
If the writer really thought Garth Brooks was a more reasonable guess than George Strait, then she is not a fan of country music. George started earlier, hasnt retired, and had a cd of his 50 No 1 hits. Not 50 hits, but 50 hits that made it to No 1. George Strait has been the king of Nashville Country since the 80’s.
There is never just ‘one best’ imo because people have different music tastes.
Flipping channels the other day, and saw Nickelback on CMT... And they sounded pretty much like everything else on there, which is sad.
I saw her on the tour she did with Robert Plant. Odd pairing, not sure how those two ever decided to get together and do music together, but it darn sure worked. A great show.
;-)
Yep, I said, “probably George Strait” when I was still out in ‘latest posts’ and could only see the headline.
Interesting because I ‘think’ he’s the only one who was actually a cowboy. Was a ranch manager before his career took off and then more recently, for fun, he and his son, Dusty, did team roping.
