I became a Grandpa Thursday morning (vanity)

I became a grandpa Thursday morning. My daughter was supposed to have a C-Section next Thursday as she was a high risk pregnancy. She went in for a stress test on Thursday and there was a slight problem with fetal heartbeat. The OB team had a quick meeting and recommended a "necessary, but not emergency" C-Section. She agreed and walked into the OR. My son-in-law helped her up on the table and then stood right by her. Evan came into the world kicking and screaming and mom and son are doing fine.

My own dad is now 76. I was lucky enough to fly 2500 miles back to Cleveland for his 75th birthday, as a surprise.

We were lower middle class growing up and money was always beyond tight. Now, things are paid off, and dad’s pension has kicked in. He’s like the richest kid on the block, handing out M & M’s and Reese’s Cups, while the rest of the neighbors are handing out Dum Dum suckers. LOL

He is a grandfather of three. My son is one of them and he’s 15 minutes away in Cleveland; the other two are out here in Utah. Dad and my son are having a grand old time, let me tell you. They hook up for lunch, they yap on the phone, they meet for Dad’s bocce league. My son is living the Life of Riley I never had; most of my grandparents were on the west coast.

Oh, did I already mention Dad “helps out” like every day is Halloween? LOL When he helped my son out with an expensive car repair, before I ever even heard about a car issue, I was a little mad at him. I wanted to teach my son about responsibility and was ticked off that my chance was lost.

Dad put me in my place, and fast. He said, “Honey, I get to do the things now, that I couldn’t afford to do for you in those days, when money was tight. And you’re just gonna have to deal with it, honey. Because while you wanna bring law and order and responsibility to the table, I wanna teach him about FAMILY, and how not everything is all business and paying back.”

Congrats my FRiend.

Hold on, you’re about to go through your second childhood and enjoy it more than the first time!

Being a grandfather was not something I really looked forward to. I figured, “I raised my kids, let them raise theirs and leave me out of it.” That all changed December before last when my granddaughter was born. She has honestly brought more joy into my life than I could ever have imagined. Now I understand why the ancient Hebrews said that living long enough to see one’s children’s children was one life’s greatest blessings. You’re in for a great time. Oh - and this September my daughter will be bringing a little grandson into the world!

Congratulations. I'll tell you your the first grandparent joke - you won't laugh for 10 years - but here goes:

Q. Why do grandchildren and grandparents get along so well?

A. Common enemy.

I love all of the heartfelt congratulations and wish to send mine along with everyone else! We have two beautiful grandbabies, one is 2 1/2, the other 1 1/2 and it's a wild and most enjoyable ride through this part of over lives. My granddaughter, the 2 1/2 year old, LOVES her PePa, as she calls him and when they are together, which is often(lucky us!!), or on the phone, they have a “connection” that none of us can explain. Not that we try, because we just love it, but there is something very, very special going on. May you have the same with Evan, which is also the name of our Grandson, and may he bring to your life what ours have brought to ours — a deep and profound love that maybe, just maybe, we were to young and too “responsible” to recognize with our children during the very early years! God bless and wishing you the happiness that we share — and don't wish for them to start walking and talking too fast — you won't be able to help it but we are already sad that ours are no longer “babies” anymore!

This is an old line used in many a tv sitcom: Parents have to say "no". Grandparents get to say "yes".

Congrats Grandpa!

At 51 most of my friends are or are becoming grandparents like yourself. My FIRST child is due June !st. I wonder if I’ll ever see grandkids. (People tell me grandkids are more fun, or at any rate easier than kids).

Thanks. This was a long time happening. Daughter has had two miscarriages and was sure adoption was the only thing left. They wanted to do an overseas adoption and had settled on Vietnam. Then Vietnam and the US had an agreement to disagree on the rules so that door closed. She was taking a fertility med and POW, it worked and only a single baby. She probably will not have another, but with two other daughters married . . . . . . . and a son and daughter to go!

He is inundated with camouflage and John Deere right now. My son-in-law (was a democrat, but not a liberal) does the right stuff, hours at the range, hours in a deer stand, hours in a bass boat, plus does the husband things for daughter. Between me and Joe (son-in-law) grandson will be fine. I see lots of cottontails, squirrels, bluegill and crappie in my future.

good for you! We are a bit older parents, too. We have learned to know a number of people in the same boat as us (not a bad boat to be in). My father-in-law had his first granddaughter at age 80. He was over the moon, of course. As will you be.
