You can view this photo when you get homesick for Washington State AFTR. It's you favorite berry coming up in a flower bed...

Your pictures are gorgeous. And I remember those berries well. I also remember my Schnauzer delicately picking those within his reach and pigging out on the berries — at least the ones left by the wildlife.

I built myself a hoop house all by myself this morning before my husband even woke up.

4 pc. flexible water tubing — smallest dia.
1 roll replacement screen — 48” x 25 ft.
a box full of large alligator clips re-purposed from the office.

I bought the larger dia. tubing to cut in pcs. and provide a “seat” for the hoops, but I didn’t need it because the sides of my raised bed contained the hoops just fine. If you were doing this in a regular garden (not raised) you’d probably need the larger tubing to hold the hoops in place.

I’ll post a picture later on.

You sound like my wife, up at 4 am, cup of “coffee” while she checks my posts and email etc then it’s out the door with Dolly in tow at exactly 5:55 and meets our daughter 8 blocks away and they walk 3 miles then it’s home at 6:05 and into the shower. Starts a wash, then another cup of “coffee” and mix cookies while talking to her friend and then Mr Bender struggles out of his snuggie and she brings me a cup of tea and starts the real coffee. It is now 7 am and it takes me another hour to shave and shower.

And yes, she does her walk every day rain or shine even during a big earthquake and has been doing it since 1978 when she was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma...

The Humboldt Bay region could have record rainfall today and while it will be good for the 200 Marigolds and 150 Statice she set out yesterday she still has 300 or so flowers to transplant soon. I am replacing the rest of the netting with aviary wire on the Blueberries this week. I have the front and 2 sides done and the wire cut for the top and I need my grandson's help with that.

Diana, the Blueberries have never looked so good and it must be the Miracid. How often should I use it and is it best to just soak the root zone? I use a 2 gallon sprinkle can for the mix...

She is amazing. I do not have the stamina for such a schedule. I’m up at 5, feed the dog and let him out, I watch from window while he takes HIS walk. Let him in, take some time on computer, or in front of Fox & Friends on TV, maybe a snooze.

There is plenty I could do around here, but I don’t seem to get much of it done. I look at this garden as away to MAKE me get something done ‘cause these are my babies and they need tending.

I hope your 1st wife has plenty of big hats and long sleeves. MM is nothing to fool around with.

Do you have an email message out for Miss USA to show up and grace your blueberry cage for a photo shoot after you replace the netting?

I have to wait until the cage is secure as I don’t want to lose her once she finds the place....

For those who may be interested in my Hoop Shade House, here's a picture I took today. I haven't even cut the screen off the roll, but I will when my husband gets home to help me hold it straight.

Photobucket

It seems to be working because it was beastly hot out there today, but my plants seemed fine. I bought the materials from Home Depot, and it is portable -- so I can move it where it is needed as the season goes on. A computer consultant I use says that he actually uses this method to keep deer out (his garden is fenced, but they jump the fence.)

Here are the directions I used which I got off the the web by looking up "shade cloth":

Buy yourself some 1/2" or 3/4" PVC pipe. It comes in 10ft lengths at your local home center. Bend those pieces, one at a time into an arch, pushing the ends into the ground on either side of your planting area. My raised beds are 4 feet wide and this arrangement works perfectly.

Buy yourself some big binder clips from your local office supply. The biggest ones they have.

While at the home center get a roll of fiberglass replacement window screening. You can use either black or gray. The screening needs to be 4 feet wide.

After your PVC hoops are in place unroll the screening and clip it to the pipe with the clips.

Voila!

You have a shade house.

It's portable, it's reusable and best of all, it's effective.

I used 1/2" pipe called "Flowguard". Make sure you get the flexible kind. I got mine at Home Depot -- $1.67/pc. The screen was more expensive. Must be 4 feet wide. I bought a 25' roll. $16.95/roll. Phier replacement screen. It's vinyl, or nylon -- charcoal color.

I’m afraid that I’m a first wife, and I don’t do well competing with other first wives, especially ones as talented and dedicated as the one you already have is! But, I’ll be your friend!
