I take a lot of pictures, thats why I like digital. One trip to Michigan, I took 780 pics in 2 days, so I am usually looking to post a bunch at one time.
Mine worked fine last year. I alternated the twisty stakes with the real cages to save space and it was great.
I have recently discovered that my young cucumber plants have eaten and my assumption is squash borer. So soon? Thought that would come much later in the growing season. Anyway, have harvested a nice crop of lettuce and Swiss Chard. They are the menu tonight.

Thanks for the encouragement on the twisty stakes. I bought them several months ago (the man in the garden store did a sales job on me) and I’ve been anxious to try them. THey don’t even have them any more and I don’t know anyone who has used them. At the time I bought them, they 6 ft. ones too for beans. Maybe next year. I have the 4 ft. size. Alternating with regular cages sounds like a plan too.
Got down to 30F last night. Still too soon to put out any of the new starts. I may move them outside to partial shade if it warms up enough today. I am also going to try jalapenos this year.
Weather Bug said it was 36 in Eureka this morning and it was 38 on the Vast Bender Deck. I believe that was be a new low temp for this day. Sun is out here but a cool breeze but I have a lot of minor projects to get done in the garden before I plant anything more...

Our lettuce season was over a month ago or so unfortunately. Enjoy it while it lasts!
I chatted with a friend in Aberdeen SD this morning about the tornados in their area. They live in a motorhome as they spend the winters in the desert near the Salton Sea in So Cal...
Beautiful plate. The eating is definitely the best part of gardening.
100F is rare for us. We might not see that the rest of the summer. It was 47F this time last week. Of course the forecast says 80F for today, but it’s hotter than that. My husband is still out there pounding in stakes for my perimeter beds. We’re trying to get this finished and everything planted before we leave for our daughter’s in VA.
I think that I’ll have to set my water timer for 2-3 times a day to water.
I just planted 20 Colorado blue spruce (from the Arbor Day Foundation) and 2 lilacs. That’s along the narrowest side of the perimeter on the 28 foot length. I’m using that space for a little nursery. The trees will stay there until it’s time to plant them elsewhere, or until they die.
Thanks. I picked that up at the church silent auction for $20 a couple of years ago. I’m a sucker for pretty dishes. Especially if they are white, or blue and white.
BTW, the salad was delicious, and my husban denjoyed it. That was good because he has been working his heart out on this project.
I tore the lettuce and cut up the little onions for zest. Then I broke a can of chilled Albecore tuna over the top, added a heaping serving spoon of 5 bean salad on that (the last in the house) and sliced hard boiled eggs over that. Then I sprinkled shredded, sharp cheddar cheese over it (a mixture of several kinds & colors) and served it all with a Vidalia onion vinaigrette. It was more than enough for 2. We may go out with friends later on for a hamburger, or may not. They want to fill us in on what happened at the Republican Convention this weekend. We didn’t go because of the garden project.
I think that I’ll throw a can of chicken into the frig to chill and do something similar tomorrow night.
Actually that worked out quite well. Originally the perimeter beds were for flowers and left over herbs and veggies. But my husband got these trees in the mail the other die. I had ordered 2 sets because he has been wanting to grow Colorado Blue Sopruce.
He was so excited about recieving them (and he has not time to plant them and make cages for them to keep the animals from chhhewing them off at the nub.) So, I said we could plant them in this extra space in the veggie garden. Suddenly he became much more cooperative about the whole project. And, I don't have to construct individual cages because we have the plot fenced.
Motor homes are not good in tornados. I hope they’ll be all right.
Does anyone know anything about a plant called Penstemon?
I bought a big one at the church rummage last year, and it sat in its container through the winter. It looks beautiful, but I can’t remember if it is a shade, or a sun plant. I need to get it in the ground, but I can’t remember where it put it.
I just planted cilantro/coriander seed not long ago, and it is doing a lot better than my flat leaf parsley. Already has it’s first true leaves. I’m excited. My husband and son built me a “lean-to” type greenhouse in April, and I’m trying to fill it up. :)
