NEW ORLEANS -- A longtime Hollywood star is now in the Metro area and in the business of cleaning up oil.

Motivated by the Exxon-Valdez oil spill, Kevin Costner began assembling a team of scientists to construct a machine that could clean up massive spills. A decade and a half later, that technology might now be put to use off the coast of Louisiana.

A massive oil slick creeping to the coast, vulnerable Louisiana wildlife just miles from its path, and Kevin Costner mingling on the lakefront. These are unusual times, and the Hollywood star is introducing his unusual machine -- one designed to separate oil from water.

Costner is a man with with a business degree and a huge fortune made from part time work, who knows what he does with the rest of his time.

Costner's team says they already have 20 machines and could start pumping the gulf as early as tomorrow if BP gives the okay. A representative from the oil company was at the demonstration, but wouldn't comment, only to say he plans to report back on what he saw.

It's unclear when BP will decide whether to give Costner’s machine a thumbs up or a thumbs down, but area leaders say they'll push the company to start using the new technology, and soon.

I'm with you guys. If Costner's company has something that works he should go for it. But why is BP calling any shots here? Once they lost control of that oil they lost possession. Costner should contract with a refinery and sub-contract the vessels needed to collect and haul the black gold. BP can go fly a kite.

“If Costner’s team had any entrepreneurial sense, they would simply go out that and show that it works.”

Well, if their inventions doesn’t work, and they create further problems as a result of their efforts, guess who will have to take responsibility?

By seeking BP’s approval, and this plan fails, Costner and his posse can pass on the blame. Furthermore, the deal may involve costs BP’s willing to cover.

As you can plainly see, I’m skeptical.

“Costner is a man with with a business degree ... “ Yeah so what, all that means is he has a student loan to pay back!
What relevant credentials can Mr. Costner present to make him “Oil Spill Doctor” worthy?

He’s only a couple of decades late.

We had seperators aboard my ship in the Navy back in the 80’s.

I am telling you that the guy has made millions in part time work, he has a degree in business and he had a life before acting, I don’t know what he does with his life, investments, and business activities, outside of acting.

You said that he is not qualified, why, what do you know?

Well, at least he’s not advocating that we should dump mounds of hay in the Gulf, or collect human hair to make giant hair mats to collect the oil. I swear I have heard the latter idea on several talk shows. Talk about a hair-brained scheme.

J.E.,,,IMO if Costner wants to put his money on this mess

then mo’power to him,,,

What we need here is a way to suck up the oil and water

and seperate them,,,

The water could be boiled off and the crude could be

unloaded at Port Fourchon and sent to the refinery...

I enjoyed "Open Range".

Costner and Duvall were excellent together, IMO.

Good for him and I commend him for his efforts. If he’s assembled a team and funded it on his own nickel since the days of Valdez, that sum could be considerable. And they may have something. I’ll hope that all serious contributions are considered. Why is this being dismissed out of hand?

I cannot believe the tone of this thread. Comparing Costner to Penn? Light years of difference separate them.

You know it amazes me, that here we have a guy (Kevin Costner) who is actually seeking to try and DO something about this damn oil spill, and many if not most of the comments from the cynical phuckwits that seem to have gravitated to this thread have nothing to contribute except to piss all over Costner and make jokes about his film career. Hey you losers, what are YOU going to do to surpass and excel Costner’s efforts? Whatzat you say? Nothing? I’m not surprised.

I say good for Costner and God bless him, how about a little respect for a good guy trying to do the right thing for a change?

Maybe he can couple this with a new movie about a minor league baseball team from New Orleans that wear uniforms that look like oil rig workers.
