MARLIN - Beneath an unusual cluster of rocks may rest the remains of famous Texas Ranger James Coryell who died in 1837 from an attack by Indians while protecting the Republic of Texas.

The Texas Historical Commission recently discovered a distinct grouping of rocks with a grave shaft underneath in Falls County that may mark the previously unidentified burial site of the Texas Ranger. The Historical Commission is seeking living collateral relatives of James Coryell (who died childless) to discuss options for the gravesite.

"This discovery is extremely exciting," said Jim Bruseth, director of the Texas Historical Commission's Archeology Division. "We hope to conduct archaeological investigations to confirm that we have found the lost grave site of Coryell, an important figure from the early days of the Republic of Texas."

Is he the one that the Lone Ranger was modeled after?

It will be great if they can ID the grave as Coryell's.

There are many single, unmarked graves though out the state or what's left of the graves.

Wooden markers rot out, sandstone & limestone markers erode over time to just being a rock.

The longer story (one of the group of four links above) had something to the effect that Coryell’s family members are being sought, probably for DNA comparison.

Years ago, I oversaw a shrimp conversion project down in Port Lavaca...the shrimp plant was kind of "U" shaped, to preserve this - a small Texas Ranger Cemetery.

All hell broke lose and gangs of crooks, drunks and druggies came out of the woodwork. Union protestors marched up and down the streets, the troubled Mayor called Austin for help. When city fathers and anxious authorities met the plane at the airport, they were surprised when only one lawman exited the aircraft. They asked the man where the rest of his men were. He replied “One riot, one Ranger” Within 24 hours peace was restored. Remember, One riot, one Ranger!
