Why we men just hate Sex & The City
Daily Mail ^ | May 13, 2010 | James Delingpole

I'd love to be able to tell you in precise detail what it is that I so thoroughly loathe about Sex And The City.

But to do that, I'd have to sit down and watch it - and frankly I'd rather be dipped in honey, dangled upside-down from a tree and eaten alive by fire ants.

>>speak for yourself, it’s a fairy tale for grown ups>>

More accurately, I would call it Hollywood’s glorification(and glamorization) of a materialistic, immoral and superficial lifestyle.

Not just you men. Let us say rather, “we thoughtful people who have better things to do with our lives than watch the antics of careless, shallow, vulgar, nonspiritual characters whose lives are being wasted in consumerism and an obsession with their genitalia.”

kinda like “Titanic”, “The Godfather”, “The Great Gatsby”, and a few other shows about this theme in popular entertainment, eh?

but normally, I do stay home and read the dictionary for fun and factual entertainment

The show’s sucess is due to it’s split characters...not one of the women is an entire personality, instead they personify the extreme of each. This is a proven comedic recipe, which has worked on many prime time comedies, including Seinfeld. Of course it’s supposed to offend... which is why people laugh at the stupidity of the characters. What I’ve always found amusing, is actual women who identify with one specific character, and you don’t know how to tell them they probably have a serious personality disorder.

But lighten up guys, the show is often hilarious fluff.

Several years ago when “The Sopranos” was at the height of its popularity, I remarked to workplace friend how much the wife and I liked it. He replied that he didn’t care much for it, but he and his wife loved SATC. Now my friend is a typical macho, sports-loving male, and we share similar political views. I attempted to watch SATC one time, but I could only stand about ten minutes worth before I switched channels.

Freepers should be reminded that they should appreciate Sex and the City as it is one of the few television shows to feature a certain Freeper in its final season. Of course, you can only see me for about 30 seconds, but that is still 1/40th of the episode!

Are the girls like that or not?”

There is a certain quarter of classless female who thinks she needs to emulate what is on television to be “in style.” Most mistake “style” for class.

Samantha (Kim Catrell’s character) is the sterotypical oversexed aging Queen. “Her” name should have been Samuel.

Thanks. Kim will always be Lassie to me! You could see why she was a notch on Pierre Trudeau’s extensive bedpost. I still don’t see what the PM saw in Margot Kidder, however.

"lots of straight women have gay friend"

The percentage of homosexual males in the total population is about two or three percent. There is a great concentration of that two or three percent in the largest cities. That means only a very tiny percentage, maybe one percent, of straight women have homosexual males for friends.

My grandmother was a fag hag. They tend to accumulate more gay friends the older they get.

1 gay guy can have more than one woman friend. We’ve got a gay guy in the company that’s friends with about half the women on staff, and that’s just at work who knows how many female friends he has outside the office.

That would still leave only a very tiny percentage of straight women with gay friends. And I don’t count knowing a homosexual the same as being a friend.

Again, where does your mother live? If she lives in the NYC metro area, then the odds are she’ll know considerably more gay males than someone who doesn’t live in that area or a similar large metro area.

We’ve got a little over 50% women in the population and about 2% gays, if each gay guy has 2 dozen female friends, which would really be a pretty small number, that covers the population.

Really it’s just a normal function of population spread. Most folks have at least 100 friends of at least casual nature, about half of them will be women, and a couple will probably be gay. That’s what happens when social animals socialize, we get a large number of friends and the demographic groups that our friends are part of become rather diverse.

Correct. Grandma is a Jersey City girl, who spent her last years just outside of Philadelphia. All of these areas have large and visible gay populations.

Many, if not most gays from the sticks tend to go to the big city once they are of age.

One thing you shouldn't forget, however, is that Americans in general are clustered around larger metro areas, albeit not to the extent that you have in Australia, Argentina, or the UK.

On a similar topic, why is it that it seems I know way more openly homosexual men than women. Are lesbians less prevalent or are they more discrete?
