FReeper Report on Oil Spill (Vanity from Navarre Beach, FL)
Vanity ^ | 5/09/2010 | highimpact

I just returned from the beach. I live about 10 minutes from Navarre Beach, in Santa Rosa County (between Pensacola and Panama City). There is a light sheen of oil in the intercoastal bay (Santa Rosa Sound), but there is no evidence of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Smoke is visible from burning oil out to sea, but you really have to look for it. A lot of the locals are concerned about the oil spill's impact on tourism. I take a walk on the beach nearly every day, and I have never seen it as crowded as it is on this Mother's Day. Every parking lot was full. Sunbathers, swimmers, surfers, snorkelers, and fisherman line the coast as far as the eye can see.

Thanks for this report. The tourist business is jumping here in Arizona too. Can’t believe anything you see or read in the state run “media” these days.

Just got a text from my lady friend in Biloxi. There is an oil sheen on the waters there.

I’m guessing folks are getting in that beach trip before the oil hits and those beautiful white beaches are turned to brown sludge. It is coming and it is GOING TO SUCK beyond belief!

I have just been so upset by this and I don’t even live in FL. THe gulf coast beaches are the jewel of the south.

I shudder to think of the wildlife impact too.

My wife and I have spent many enjoyable vacations near you (along Hwy 30-A). We have always thought those are some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. I sure hope your area is not affected by the oil mess.

I think that might be part of it. I think there's also a natural curiosity that people have...to see what an oil spill looks like. The beaches are beautiful here. I'll take note of the amount of people I see after the sludge arrives. I'm sure people will quickly lose their sense of curiosity.

I imagine everyone is there because this looks like it could be the last weekend we’ll all get to go down there.

You know. BP’s incompetence in this. Beyond criminal, they deserve to go bankrupt for this. The Obama administration’s laughable response, well, that’s why we have elections. What really has got to me though is the wait. It is far worse waiting every day hearing how its inching closer than if it had just went on and came ashore this last week like its supposed to. It’s just making it worse.

I live on the water. The prospect of my yard dying in some way because of this is bad, especially because we do grow some food crops in the yard.

What I don’t think people outside our region realize, and I don’t think the guys at BP get it, is that this is our entire way of life thats about to die. For those who aren’t familiar with the world along I-10 we are more a region to ourselves than to our respective states and our whole culture is based around the proximity to the water.

We’re about to lose our entire culture for I don’t know how long. Hurricanes destroy property but that can always be rebuilt and it doesn’t change how we live. This is going to change how we live. That’s what scares me.

I agree with all of that. We moved to Navarre nearly 8 years ago because of the beauty and the pace of life on the emerald coast. Ivan destroyed our first house, but it didn’t make me love the area any less. That’s what insurance is for. I wonder if any insurance companies will pay claims for property damage caused by the oil? I haven’t heard any of the so-called experts discuss it. BP can’t possibly cover all of the costs of this disaster. The hit to our local economy could potentially destroy a lot of small businesses when the tourist dollars disappear.

You will never convience me that this was not intentional. The timing could not be better for the libs and BP had to much to loose. This was not an accident.

Big zero had everything to gain from this and BP had nothing to gain from this. Do the math.

What does Obama have to gain from this exactly?

This calls his leadership into question and could cause the federal government billions to trillions of dollars once BP is tapped out and the politicians of both parties in our region decide that demagoging this against the federal government with demands for money could be a great way to stay in power.

And I think BP did have something to gain. I think they thought in the beginning they could control this and so they engaged in strategic PR assuming they could get it under control and the government was eager to assist them.

When it became apparent that they couldn’t they still withheld the truth a bit longer to try and prevent a consumer backlash within the region earlier than it is coming. And it will come. I look for most of the BP stations in this area to close within a year of when the beaches turn black.

Gee, maybe he could ban all future drilling in the gulf,,, which he did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The price of oil goes WAY UP, and it is!

It hurts the country and that is his main goal, to tear down the USA and make it the USSA. Healthcare just shoved us off the cliff.

All the tree huggers now can point and say... see...see... we told you ... we need big government to save us..... need I go on?
