The controversial marriage of 71-year-old businessman Halis Toprak and 17-year-old Nazlıcan Tağızade is coming to an end -- but the divorce proceedings promise to bring a bit more scandal to the headlines before it's all over.
The story made newspaper and tabloid headlines when Toprak married Tağızade on July 18, 2009, at one of the businessman's summer homes in Kuşadası. Toprak's new wife was required to present the authorities with written permission from her parents as she was not legally allowed to wed of her own accord as a minor. The marriage was reportedly a surprise to Toprak's family, especially to his ex-wife Ayşe Toprak, the mother of 10 of his 12 children.
Trouble was on the horizon, though, and before long, the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) seized 20 of his companies.
In February, Halis Toprak said he regretted marrying Tağızade because the marriage had brought shame to his name. Nazlıcans family said: We chose you [Halis Toprak] because you had planes, helicopters and yachts. They are all gone. You are worse than us now, he added.
According to news reports, Tağızade attempted suicide in early April by taking pills. She was rushed to İstinye State Hospital, where her stomach was pumped, and was discharged. But controversy continued to swirl around the marriage with allegations of extortion and sexual perversion.
After less than a year of marriage, it appears that the businessman has had enough. Speaking outside the Sarıyer Family Court on Tuesday Topraks lawyer, Turgut Tavşanoğlu, said the businessman had filed for divorce. Weve opened a divorce case against Nazlıcan Toprak. Along with the divorce case, we filed a criminal complaint with the state prosecutors office due to the systematic threats, insults, blackmail and similar acts that have been carried out against Halis Toprak, he said, noting that they would request that the court issue a restraining order to keep Tağızade and her family away from Topraks home.
Tavşanoğlu said that when the TMSF seized Topraks companies, it immediately created tension between him and his young wife. She started fights every day, asking her husband, What can you give me? They were living separately in the same home, he claimed.
Responding sharply to a question regarding allegations that Toprak mistreated his wife and did not feed her, Tavşanoğlu said: From the first day of the marriage, we can document TL 5,000 in credit card expenditures each month [by Tağızade]. In addition, through threats and blackmail, he was forced to buy her gold necklaces and bracelets worth around TL 50,000 and also a vehicle worth TL 35,000 for her mother, Şehrinaz Tağızade. How is it that this woman has been left hungry? Could such a thing be?
The lawyer also denied allegations that Toprak had made perverted demands of his wife in the bedroom. Such things were never in question. We were even to ashamed to respond to such allegations in the divorce petition; if she brings it up, well address it, he said. Topraks attorney added that they had demanded TL 50,000 from Tağızade in emotional damages over an interview given to the Vatan daily and that the divorce filing included a request for another TL 100,000 in emotional damages for the trauma Halis Toprak has been subjected to and the rape of his personal rights throughout the course of the marriage and now divorce proceedings.
This wasnt a wise marriage; thats become clear, he said.
If I would have had to marry this creep at 17....I would have taken him for more than a few trinkets and a 3,100USD a month stipend!!! LOL! ;)
Maybe he was dyslexic, and finally figured out she wasn't really 71 afterall.
Looks like they’re both “Turkeys.” LOLOLOLOLOL
Mama knew what she was doing when she likely arranged the marriage.
Hopefully you married an older, wealthier Turkish tycoon. :)
A more in-depth credit check might have been in order.
Doesn’t publicly saying that, after he already married her, even worse?
With age comes wisdom, I hear.
So he’s not really a tycoon, and based on the picture she’s really not a beauty queen. Sounds like the only mistake they made is that they’re were marrying for love, they just didn’t know it.
Reminds me of the old joke:
“Two old men are sitting on the porch when this 18 year girls walks by. One old man yells out, hi dear!, the girl yells back, hi honey.
The other old man looks at him and says, How did you a 71 year old man get an eighteen year old girl to marry you? The other old man says, I told her I was 81 years old.”
She probably wouldn't sleep with him without a ring. A guy once told me that getting married for sex is like buying an airline for the peanuts.
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "If she dies, she dies."
Well ya could have shared that bit of wisdom a wee bit earlier......wanna buy some peanuts ?
wow- that is pretty amazing photo - she LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM!!!
I have notice that a lot- people tend to fall most in love with someone who looks just like them
When i was a kid I had this infatuation you would not believe for one of my teachers (she was HOT) and when I saw my high school graduation picture and hers- she could have been my twin sister
“...allegations that Toprak mistreated his wife and did not feed her...”
Judging from the photo, she’s been feasting pretty well...
Dude, you are a tool.
“I will never forget it, you know? It was on the occasion of Ernie’s eightieth birthday, and in honor of the occasion, he married a twenty year old girl. And he rang me up the very next day and he said to me ‘Soph! Soph! I have just married myself a twenty year old girl! What do you think of that?’. And I said to him ‘Ernie, when I am eighty years old, I shall marry myself a twenty year old boy...and let me tell you something, Ernie! Twenty goes into eighty a hell of a lot more than eighty goes into twenty!’”
