EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
WorldNetDaily ^ | May 3, 2010 | Joseph Farah

Posted on 05/04/2010 5:12:37 AM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

There is renewed alarm about the possibility of an EMP attack – electromagnetic pulse – on the United States because of Iran's work on a multi-stage Space Launch Vehicle, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

And experts forecast if such an attack were a success, it effectively could throw the U.S. back into an age of agriculture.

"Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can't support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity," said Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy. "And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards."

A recent launch of an SLV by Iran has sparked renewed concern of an attack that could send an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to wipe out computer controls for systems on which society has come to rely, officials say.

As the G2 Bulletin reported last week, Ronald Burgess, director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, revealed that Iran successfully launched a multi-stage SLV, the Simorgh. The device ultimately could be equipped with a nuclear bomb, which the U.S. intelligence community assesses Iran is developing.

Officials also report Iran has been testing detonation of its nuclear-capable missiles by remote control while still in high-altitude flight...

Yea, I am not concerned. We have Obama in the Whitey House and Napolitano at DHS — what is there to worry about?

Imagine if they didn't have the ability to heat water to a boiling point.

A little bit of clorine bleach or iodine will take care of that.

Yeah, but I really do need to get that pony he promised so I can ride it into town when this hits the fan.

I live in a rural area where there is alot of old tractors still being used to day. Mostly as people's play toys. They plow their gardens and grade their driveways with which could back to farming at a moments notice.

Many portable generators have digital circuitry now and would be useless if a high enough field were applied. But I agree, much hysteria exists on the issue.

“How many acres do you think can be planted and harvested by the average farmer with a museum moldboard plow and a mule?”

The correct answer is 40 acres. Been that way since the Middle Ages.

Put up a sign stating you've poisoned specific produce so they raid at their own risk. Problem solved.

Sign seen in refrig (somewhere on the net).

Person put note on their drink stating steal at your own risk, I peed in this drink.

Someone added at the bottom, "So did I".

First, suburbanites actually can grow a lot of their own food. It’s called a “garden” and we have seen a recent trend back to backyard gardening.

They're going to grow enough to live on in their garden?!?! You figure out how much food a person needs (bare minimum) in a year. If they don't grow that, they starve - unless someone else has grown extra, and they have something the someone else wants. The someone else has to live real close, too; remember, there's no longer any fuel, so there's no transportation.

Obviously, you and I disagree. You think I'm too apocalyptic, I think you're too Polyannish. We aren't going to settle this on Free Republic. I hope we never find out in real life. Even under your scenario, it's going to be worse than anyone in the U.S. has ever seen.

Meant to add that even if you can start the digital generator it likely won’t be capable of producing AC output. Both of my generators are kept in metal boxes of one kind or another. Not real Faraday cages but maybe a little protection.

This means that if someone was in, let's say St. Louis, when the EMP hit. They decided to walk to Scott AFB ...

Assuming they don't get murdered passing through East St. Louis (many The Won voters there, for those not familiar with the area).

The hysteria exists because people panic and don't see the math. Let's take the town that my kinfolk are from. It has right at 2000 people in it. Let's be real low on all of our numbers to allow for pessimism. Let's say 500 families and each family has 1.5 cars (very low for a small farm town). So 750 cars let's say with 12 gallon tanks. And let's estimate that each tank is only 1/3 full. So 750 X 4 gallons is 3000 gallons sitting around in idle cars. That's without the tanks at the gas station.

Ok, now let's look at how much food they can produce quickly. Let's say someone gets an old John Deere up and running and they plow a single 640 acre field (that is 1 square mile) using 60 gallons of gas. They plant corn and becuase they harvest by hand, they have a poor yeild of 100 bushels per acre (a typical yeild for corn is around 160 to 180 bu/acres).

While the corn is growing, they manage to build a mill that will use either draft animals, a water wheel, or a wind turned stone to grind. So after the harvest, they are able to use this crude mill to grind the corn into cornmeal. At 100bu/acre they would have 64,000 bushels to grind and assuming a low production rate of 10lbs of corn meal per bushel, they would end up with 640,000lbs of corn meal.

That would be 14oz of corn meal for everybody each day for a year. That is the basis of their subsistance diet.

That is a single field using 60 gallons of gas.

Onions, carrots and turnips are all long storage foods. Tomatoes, greenbeans, beets, cucumbers and okra can all be canned. Squash and strawberries would be seasonal, but would add to the diet. And all of the above have short growing seasons and could be gardened.

Peach, apple and plum trees all grow easily in that area to add to the diet.

Yes, many people would die, but with a few days to map out a plan, many small farm towns could find ways to stay going indefinately.

The claim is “90%”. That’s a bull claim based on hysteria and not on logic.

By the way we have 5,113 nukes.

Some of us are prepared to live in a mad max world...

I even own a car that has no electronics to be fried by an EMP.

Why everyone is looking under their hood I’ll be packed and leaving town on the back roads.

They're going to grow enough to live on in their garden?!?!

Most people have no idea how many weeds, barks, and roots are edible. We've studied that as well. We'll probably end up teaching our neighbors. That'll get people through the spring and summer. Winter can be the garden harvest and wild roots/barks (for potato substitutes or pastas).

I think the most important thing is food and water. Learn the edible plants in your area. Get a small book you can grab in an emergency, and pray you are never forced to use it.

It lines up closely with what the DoD had been telling us (when I was USAF/AD) for years. 90% is probably pretty close to being correct.

Obviously you did not read the government report linked on your linked site.

Anyone that wants to get an idea of life after an EMP attack should read ONE SECOND AFTER by WILLIAM R. FORSTCHEN. And if that isn’t enough to get you heading to COSTCO for some canned food try PATRIOTS by JAMES WESLEY RAWLES or maybe LUCIFER’S HAMMER by Larry Niven and David Pournelle.

You beat me to it. : ) Agree, agree. . .
