Fellow FReepers, I have just been told that my Grandpa is breathing his last breaths on this Earth. Everyone must pass, but what makes this one tough is that he was my own personal WWII hero. His name is John and on his first bomber mission over Germany in WWII, he was shot down and was a POW in Stalag 17B for the rest of the war. He had one of his hands smashed by a German rifle butt, he had some teeth kicked out by German Army boots, and he suffered severe frost bite on his lower legs. He was an easy target because he was 6'3". His job was being a gunner on a B-17. He lived a good Catholic life with no complaints.
We veterans that stand in his shadow are in awe of the accomplishments and sacrifices of Americas greatest generation.
May God rest his soul and may he live always in your heart and memories. I am very sorry for your loss.
He was a hero, he was ill, he was tired and he was ready to go home to his Lord. He deserves the peaceful sleep and calm he now enjoys. Our special thanks to him and those like him. We are indebted forever. Sleep well Grandpa...you have earned it. Amen.
When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds circling in flight. Do not stand by my grave and cry ...I am not there. I did not die."

I agree....all the way, cubreporter...all the way.
May your grandfather rest in God’s peace.
Prayers for and condolences to his family and friends.
I love that. Thank you. Never heard it before.
May “Grandpa John” rest in peace.
May you and your loved one know the peace of God that passes all understanding as you share these last moments together, and thereafter find great comfort of heart that this is only a momentary seperation until that day He calls us all home to be together once more.
Prayers for your grandpa, he sounds so much like my dad. Prayers for you and your family. Your grandpa will be rewarded for the life he has led just as I’m sure my dad was.
Condolences to you and your family on the loss of your wonderful Grandpa.
