Hollywood sign is saved at last minute by Hugh Hefner
bbc ^ | 27 April 2010

The famous Hollywood sign has been saved from being spoiled by property development by a last-minute donation from Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner.

The soft-porn magnate gave $900,000 (£580,000) to the fund which was set up to stop the site being developed.

The sign is owned by the city, but the property around it belongs to a group of Chicago-based investors.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger described the news as "the Hollywood ending we hoped for".

Ironic...since the sign was originally constructed to promote a housing development.

I’m frankly suprised they didn’t just condemn it and take it for a pittance by eminent domain.

“Film director Peter Jackson may face legal action over his plans to install a version of the famous Hollywood sign in New Zealand, according to reports.

The proposed Wellywood sign would sit above the Oscar-winning director’s studios in his home city of Wellington.

But the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which owns the original sign in Los Angeles, has threatened legal action.

“The sign is trademarked,” president Leron Gubler told the Telegraph,”and we constantly enforce our trademarks”.

“It’s fine for them to put up a sign, just don’t duplicate ours.”

Jackson, best known for his Academy Award-winning adaptation The Lord of the Rings, had hoped to emulate the original 1923 sign, but has been warned that the font and staggered lettering of the sign constitute the trademark.”

Isn’t it ever! That’s just one of the many bits of (useless?) trivia floating around in my head.

It's no secret that Hefner does not have the money and certainly not the cashflow he had years ago. Why he would spend $900K on this is wacky but it is his money.

I predict that at some point in time that he outlives his money. But what a good time he had!

I'm gonna lose my mind
Get 30 inch spinners and pimp my ride
Go back in time, be there that night and save 2 pacs life
Then pay my fine for getting caught f**king on the Hollywood sign
I got the game on lock
I'll have a bottle and a glock

If I was Peter Jackson, I’d put up one in NZ that said “Hollywoodland Down Under”

There’s no trademark on that! (yet)
