Iceland volcano from Space: The Dramatic Ash Plume Engulfing Britain and 'Nightmarish Face' Seen From Above [Pics in URL] CLAIRE BATES 16th April 2010
Created deep in the volcanic bowels of Iceland, this is the dramatic plume of ash engulfing the UK as seen from space. The hazy cloud spewing from the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano was captured by the Modis instrument on board Nasa's Terra and Aqua satellites, which view the entire Earth's surface once every two days. Modis was designed to respond rapidly so it can track natural disasters such as floods and forest fires in near real time.
The plume from the Icelandic volcano - seen as a grey-brown streak drifting across the middle of the image - is visible from space. It was imaged by the Modis instruments on two Nasa satellites as it blew towards the Shetland Islands In this natural-colour image taken yesterday, we can see the volcanic plume moving south-easterly from southern Iceland. It blows past the Faroe Islands and arcs slightly towards the north near the Shetland Islands. The tan hue indicates a fairly high ash content.
The spread of volcanic ash prompted authorities in the UK, Ireland, France, and Scandinavia to close airspace over their countries. The airspace closure had a ripple effect, disrupting flights all over the world. Unlike the soft, fluffy material that results from burned vegetation, volcanic ash consists of tiny jagged particles of rock. (snip)
It is not known how long the airspace closures will last because it depends on how long the volcano continues to erupt as well as wind direction. The scream: A radar image shows the crater of Eyjafjallajokull in southeast Iceland, which looks like the nightmarish face painted by Edvard Munch

Don’t let the bastards wear you down

They have some cabins on container vessels south hampton to USA
Hey, FWI, Check out THESE Clouds!
I am here with my saintly old husband! Is the RAF club for the airforce? THe weather is gorgeous is it not. YOu can run down to Jermyn Street and they will outfit you beautifully with the latest pink or chartreuse socks that my husband refuses to wear!!
My internet here is 25Cents a minute,,I kid you not. Hotel is I think 350 pounds a day however much that is. But tea is like 17 pounds a person. Gads. EVerything is expensive.
Will do.
Did that, called around to several freighter/container ship companies. Apparently, people travel for fun on those ships all the time. Anyway, everything is fully booked and Monday they will contact me to let me know if there are any openings.
I also called RAF Mildenbhall, just to register for space-a travel. I did that because, say, the airspace opens I may be able to jump on a C-17 days before Virgin has me booked.
We shall see . .
Yes, the RAF Club is for serving or former RAF servicemen. I was able to join back in the mid-90’s because I was an exchange officer to the RAF. I walked by your hotel today, and it is a good one, for sure.
I am with your husband on the choice of socks. Heck, I generally stay away from Brit fashion!
Have you been to London before?
I use to travel Space on MATS. Waiting and being ready is just part of the game.
Ahh for being young!
Yeah. Time is something I have a lot of.
Welcome to my world. And it's coming to US soon if we don't stand up and fight like crazy.
Well this just goes to show that nobody should be traveling to Europe. The situation of the volcano spewing ash is absolutely unacceptable and it is for this reason that we should all stay the heck away from Europe.
I hear the Queen of England has several homes...give her a call!
You and your dear husband are invited to join me for lunch at the club, Monday, 1230hrs, if you are free.
There are people stranded all over the US. It isn’t as noticeable, since domestic service isn’t affected.
It’s time to start up some passenger ship service between the US and Europe. Maybe the cruise lines can free up some older ships for crossings.
Bloody lucky you found a bureaucrat with a brain.
That name twisted my tongue for days. It needs to be Anglicized. I finally settled on this...
Eye-ah-jalla-joe-kull
You spent a couple of days doing us a big favor...sounds better than anything I could come up with...LOL :O) TY
Uh, I don’t know about EVERYTHING in Europe being closed.
Someone on another thread stated that flights are departing from southern Europe. They quoted the following internet site as the source.
Flight Aware - Live Flight Tracking
Good luck and Godspeed!
