Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will endorse Marco Rubio over Gov. Charlie Crist in Florida's Republican Senate primary.
Romney plans to announce the endorsement Saturday, according to a Romney adviser who asked to remain anonymous because the official announcement has not been made.
Romney is the third major 2008 presidential candidate to endorse Rubio. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee have also endorsed the former House speaker.
The adviser said Crist and Rubio both sought the endorsement, but Romney believes Rubio has a stronger conservative record and is an idea-driven leader.
Romney's PAC is contributing $5,000 to Rubio's campaign and the former governor plans to campaign with Rubio on Monday.

Palin endorsed Rubio last week.
I hope you’re right because is Rubio wins then he will beat Meek.
Who is running for Gov too as that is a position we need and then hopefully we get the AG.
No point in thinking that Nelson will get booted one day is there?
why not for him the rats like him anyway and he is certainly no republican.
I dislike Romney as much as anyone around here but keep in mind that he still has serious stroke (e.g., $$$) in the party. Rubio is running on the Republican ticket.
That said, Romney’s trying to weasel his way into the good graces of the conservatives by supporting Rubio. We won’t fall for it.
I guess he decided which one was more popular.......since everyone knew Rubio was more conservative he could have endorsed him six months ago if that was his reason.

SPEAKERS:
CHRIS WALLACE, HOST
GOV. CHARLIE CRIST, R-FLA.
WALLACE: Speaking of these questions about your political future, there have been persistent rumors in Florida that you are so far behind, at least currently, in the polls double digits to Mr. Rubio that you may run instead as an independent. Here is your chance to dispel all the rumors. Are you willing to pledge right here, right now that you will run in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate and not run as an independent?
CRIST: Im running as a Republican. Im very proud to be from the party of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, others that really have stood up for the principles of our party, like Ronald Reagan. This is a great party. It has a great future. We have a great opportunity to win in November. Its important that we put a candidate up that can win in November.
WALLACE: So are you ruling out that you will file as an independent by the April 30th deadline?
CRIST: Thats right. Thats right. Im running as a Republican.
WALLACE: You will run not for a governor youll run for Senate, and you will run as a in the Republican primary.
CRIST: Chris, Im running for the United States Senate. I know that our country needs help. Im running as a Republican. This man to my left is a friend but I hope to defeat him on August the 24th, and I would encourage every Florida Republican to get out and vote.
WALLACE: Will you support the winner of the GOP primary, whether its you or Marco Rubio?
CRIST: Of course I will. Of course I will. But I think before that decision is made, people
WALLACE: Well, Im going to get Im going to Ill give you an opportunity for a final statement. I just want to say, though, you are saying you are going to run in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. You will not run on the no party affiliation line.
CRIST: Thats right. Thats right. Thats what Im saying.
Right. He would be a good Crat candidate. Floriduh had Bob Grahm and Lawton Chiles. Meeks would probably step aside for a good appointed position. Crist is a Democrat at heart. Just saying do not be surprised if it happens. Funny. Grahm was the only Politician I ever saw eliminate a government program...car inspections.
Not the end for Rubio, Just means Romney know he has to turn RIGHT. There has got to be better out there for trust is gone in Romney.
if he does leave the GOP then him saying he would only run as a republican on fox can be run again and again
I hope the man leaves the state personally. can’t stand him.
That’s funny. Romney thinks a hell of a lot more like Crist than he does Rubio!
Better late than never. I would have thought he would have jumped in much earlier just to pay Crist back for endorsing McCain in the waning days of the Florida Primary of 2008.
He would fit right in in San Fransissyco.
I don’t trust the repentance and conversion though. Romney is not now nor will he ever be a conservative. I think most people know that.
If somebody does the right thing, they should be praised for it, not constantly be attacked. Conservatives are not going to win if any time a centrists leans to the right, they are bashed.
Hey Mitt, shut up and go away. We don’t need no stinkin’ RINOs.
If crist goes indi this may be a different ball game.
You want us to lay off that primary candidate but no thanks, we will continue to identify him as unacceptable for the Republican party leadership role.
Well Mitt Romney does win the “Who’s smarter than Newt Gingrich” prize.
If C. Crist goes independent, or even if he does not, Rubio will need more support that just the conservatives. That is where Rudy G. and Mitt R. can make a difference by attracting independents.
Granny said that how happy they were when some noted Democrats supported R. Reagan.
