I agree. Hillary and Obama both make the same mistake which makes them sound as obnoxious as they are......but Sarah and Ms. Bachman should tone it down.......

Good tip. Sometimes Sarah gets a bit shrill leaving her exposed to ridicule and dampening her message.

True. Palin is doing a better job of pacing her speech it seems. Now if some speech coach could just get her to form her sentences in a normal pattern. Has anybody identified what's so odd about her speech. She always says things like “whom has ignored the will of the people” vs. he has... I love Sarah, but it makes her hard to understand.

Was wondering if anyone else bothered by this. Yes, the 'voice-reach-scream pitch' has got to go. Have to say; I turned out more than a few times; per ears 'defense mechanism'. . .and am sure some turned her 'off'.

Sarah does need to work a bit on her speaking voice as well; she is smart and wise. . .but a too young voice/rising/falling and giggly needs to mature a bit; per her addressing the most serious of topics in a serious time.

I know; I know; (unfortunately, like Obama folks; she is not to be criticized. ..) 'Sara is perfect and you do not want ANY changes'.

Even Margaret Thatcher was advised to 'grow' her voice; and she so advised Sarah to do same. /Think she was not listening, however/;^)/

I agree! Both need voice lessosn and coaches to lower the pitch and tone of their voices.

If Sarah knocked her tone and pitch down several notches, it would make a world of differnce in public perception of her intelligence and gravitas- bias against her for this is way undeserved, but bias nonethleless.

And if Sarah would throw in a speech coach for timing an modulation and slow down her delivery, she would be perfect and so much more powerful. She already has natural instincts for timing and delivery.

I sure cannot figure out why she hasnt donw this already. Hubris?

The present president never shouts or raises his voice. He must not be Panamanian. I have never seen a certified copy of his birth certificate.

Sarah needs lessons on how to lower the pitch of her screechy/running the fingernails over a slate blackboard voice.

In general, female speakers do have to be careful to avoid shouting -- lest they sound shrill. However, a public speech is not the same as a radio or TV appearance. Effective public speakers are animated -- if they let the microphone do all the work, they risk sounding too detached.

When a speech is broadcast, the medium is changed. Changing the medium (from a live, in-person event, to TV) does create problems. We have different expectations about how people sound, in various media. Also, as some have mentioned already, better sound systems are probably required.

Palin does well but after listening to ‘snippettes’ of yesterday’s Tea Party in Boston, she sounded very shrill to my ears. Nothing is worse on ears than a shrill sounding woman who raises the tone of her voice to what sounds like hysteria. Moderating a voice is critical in public speaking, a gift for some, a learned skill for others. There is no shame in hiring a good coach to assist with this.

Anyone who knows Sarah and Michele: They have a similar problem: They don't trust the microphone to do the work. When addressing a crowd -- don't shout!

I can appreciate your point. On the other hand, what might be perceived as shouting may just be an honest expression of passion.
