VANITY: Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann: Please let the microphone do the work!

Anyone who knows Sarah and Michele: They have a similar problem: They don't trust the microphone to do the work. When addressing a crowd--don't shout! Listen to Ronald Reagan: Even when speaking to a hugest crowd, Reagan never raised his voice. He always talked to the person at home, sitting six feet from the television. He knew that people don't want to hear shouting in their living room.

Palin does well but after listening to ‘snippettes’ of yesterday’s Tea Party in Boston, she sounded very shrill to my ears. Nothing is worse on ears than a shrill sounding woman who raises the tone of her voice to what sounds like hysteria. Moderating a voice is critical in public speaking, a gift for some, a learned skill for others. There is no shame in hiring a good coach to assist with this.

I want only Palin for president in 2012 but this advice re the microphone is right. She can adjust this.

Fair point. Teddy Kennedy was awful with this too.

Stop whining. At an outdoor event you should show some enthusiasm. If they shout during an interview ping me.

She always says things like whom has ignored the will of the people vs. he has... I love Sarah, but it makes her hard to understand.

Every once in a while I catch a piece of bozo speaking. He constantly mangles his grammar, not just the subjective/objective business but also the singular/plural thing. He speaks in excessive run-ons and frequently loses the connection between subject and verb. And him a college professor!

Thank you for your well-reasoned, courteous, and informative reply. It’s certainly reassuring that our movement has such intellectual powerhouses as you on board!

Then the problem is the man in charge of the sound system.
The people who are there in person are a drop in the bucket compared with the millions who will hear a sound bite on television. And if they hear screeching, they will be turned off.

I think she rings her statements around with qualifications—that make her sound weak or hesitant.
Like:
“...dependent on foreign oil from people who perhaps don’t have America’s best interests at heart.”
Instead of:
“...we are buying oil from nations that sponsor terrorism.”

To the viewer at home, it doesn’t matter whether the event is outdoors or indoors. Shouting and screeching sound the same either way.

Mrs. Bozo mangles her grammar as well.

Good point. I think I remember hearing that and cringing at the time. There are just too many extraneous words. She does a brilliant job when she delivers a prepared text (e.g. the Republican Convention). I think she has a brain, and she works hard at her homework, but her speech pattern obscures her knowledge and reasoning ability. But hey, even Moses had Aaron.

“Sarah gets a bit shrill leaving her exposed to ridicule and dampening her message.”
Unfortunately, as long as she is living they will find something to ridicule. That’s how hate works.
If she were more soft spoken, they would just call her weak.
