Why would he want to spend all his money on an inferior product by apple?

Because of this

It’s sitting right here next to me, but it is not the one I am using.

What kind is it?

It’s one of the aluminum bodied macbooks from last year. I bought it for my wife. I decided to try to use it so I could help her with her work more efficiently, I finally gave up.

Now the thing is cord bound and my wife is using a Win 7 netbook computer until she can get to the Apple store to get the battery changed. She hates windows but is starting to appreciate Word.

Word is about the only thing I like from MSFT so I'm simpatico with your wife on the issue :-)

Was it hardware issues or software issues with the Mac? It's very strange the battery should die in a year. I have a MacBook Pro from 2006 still running on the original battery without any issues.

The battery dying didn’t make me happy.

Most of it was usability issues. They are personal preferences. When my wife uses the computer, she does not want to know where files are, she does not want to just do something herself instead of letting the computer do it. I want to open directories, drag, drop and copy without the computer getting in my way.

When things are working right, the Mac was pleasant to use. When something didn’t work, it was like trying to put something together using directions written in Chinese while the computer is actively hiding pieces.

So long as I didn't discombobulate my computer, I'm satisfied.

Sure. Use a word like "discombobulate" and the tell us how your are NOT a techie! The nerve of some people.

They are personal preferences.

When I went from Mac OS9 to the radically different OS X I had several weeks of serious frustration so I see your point.

And you are right to be ticked at Mac advocates implying that it is brainlessly easier than anything else. It's not.

In fact, I think Windows (and I'm talking XP) might actually be more intuitive "quitting by going to start" jokes aside.

My wife just called. She finally made it to the Apple store, they ran diagnostics, the battery had less than 300 recharges and remaining capacity was at 0%, they told her that it should have 80% at 300 charges. Using this, they determined she had a defective battery and put a new one in for free today.

I’m feeling a little more charitable towards Steve Jobs now.

Apple is pretty good about customer service.

Your basic complaint is that it doesn't work exactly like Windows. If you know how, you can do everyone of those things without hinderence... you just did not want to invest the time to learn how.

“Your basic complaint is that it doesn’t work exactly like Windows. If you know how, you can do everyone of those things without hinderence... you just did not want to invest the time to learn how.”

Maybe.

I’m turning into an old dog and don’t have that many new tricks left in me.

I have twenty-five years of accumulated neuromuscular reflexes on the PC/DOS/Windows, I definitely don’t have the time and probably don’t have the spare neurons left to learn all of the things I would need to know. Although I have to say, when I discovered that Mac now has the equivalent to the right mouse button, it did make doing things more simple.

I guess I just have a problem with the claims of how radically easy it is to use the Mac OS when there is a real learning curve involved when doing things outside the bounds of a program.

Now that Apple fixed our Macbook (Kudos to Apple, they replaced the defective battery out of warranty for free), I will sit down and start using it again. I will also try to keep an open mind.

They also reset my daughter iTouch for her on the same visit. Unfortunately, when she tried to sync it when she got home, it told her that her software was out of date and she had the same update failure and it is not working again. I’m going to need to research this a little further when I get some time. It’s close to an hour drive to the Apple store and I don’t know if we will get back that way for a few weeks.

I do have a little lust for the new i7 Mac laptops that have been announced.

I will be 61 in two months, dangerdoc, and I am learning the changes MS made in Windows7 for no reason except to make changes. Some of them are very frustrating. ;^)> So I know where you are coming from.

It actually IS easier... and I can attest to that fact from years of helping ex-Windows users get THROUGH that learning curve and seeing the "aha" moments when they realize that and let go of the hard way and embrace the easier. It takes learning to let go of the Microsoft pre-programed reflexes a bit... and looking for the more logical way of doing things. Many of these people have MORE years than you of engraved neuro-pathways to overcome... but once those pathways have been re-laid they see what they've been putting up with all these years. Some have done it in less than a week... others have taken three. A small minority have dug in their heels and just refused to try... and either return their Macs or take to saying they aren't easy.

Now that Apple fixed our Macbook (Kudos to Apple, they replaced the defective battery out of warranty for free), I will sit down and start using it again. I will also try to keep an open mind.

:^)> I told you there was something radically wrong with that battery. Be sure you condition it from time to time... allow it to completely deplete... and then recharge it.

Now that is a poser. Was this done on the PC? Perhaps there is something wrong with the iTunes install on that computer. That seems to be the one thing that is constant in this problem... the computer. Did they show you what they did when they reset it at the Apple Store??? Doc, I'd hook that iPod up to your wife's laptop and do the update on there. Then do a fresh install of iTunes on your daughter's PC and then see what happens. As i mentioned before, set up a kids account on the MacBook and there's no way they can touch your wife's stuff... or damage the OS... and let them do their updating of the iPods there.

Doc, while you're learning the Mac, I'm willing to hold your hand on questions. I will answer honestly. If I don't know, I will say so. Either Freepmail me... or call me. I am going to Freemail you with my cell phone number and feel free to call me. If I can't answer your question, I will find out and get back to you. OK?

I do have a little lust for the new i7 Mac laptops that have been announced.

You'd have to shove me out of the way in the lust line... but I can't justify it either... I am still waiting for my iPad to be delivered.
