My wife just called. She finally made it to the Apple store, they ran diagnostics, the battery had less than 300 recharges and remaining capacity was at 0%, they told her that it should have 80% at 300 charges. Using this, they determined she had a defective battery and put a new one in for free today.

I’m feeling a little more charitable towards Steve Jobs now.
