According to the Washington Post this morning, the guy snuck a cigarette in the airplane lavatory. This, of course, set off an alarm. When he was asked about it, he said he was trying to light his shoe. He was promptly arrested by air marshals. The plane landed safely in Denver, and all of the crew and passengers were detained for debriefing. The guy is a Third Secretary (very minor diplomat) at the Quatar Embassy. Name does sound Muslim, which would hardly be surprising in Quatar. I have the impression this is much ado about nothing. The guy will probably get the boot from the US, and that will be that.
