Weird stuff seems to go with major comets. When a comet appeared in A.D. 60, the people of Rome assumed it meant the impending death of their still new emperor, Nero. He responded by exiling a potential rival. When another comet turned up just 4 years later, ancient historians say he ordered the execution of dozens of nobles. It is said that Moctezuma II saw a comet in 1517 that foreshadowed the downfall of Aztec empire. In 1910, a wave of hysteria swept over the United States amid reports that Earth was about to pass through Halley's tail.

Canned mackerel is one of the cheapest ways to eat fish, as well as being loaded with those wonderful Omega-3's and mm-protein and lots of highy absorbably calcium. Hm. 'absorbably calcium.'

Unfortunately, it uncannily like canned mackerel. Hm. Uncannily.

But contrariwise and fortunately, if you simmer it first in a little milk, it takes away some of the cannishness. Can. Niptions.

Oh Lordy!~ (holding head.) It's happening again!

“Canned-ness”? Send me your recipe? I can see doing a fusion thing with some curried quinoa and cilantro (which I am growing), but I’d need to know exactly what to do with the fish.

Do they sell canned mackerel at Walmart?

Mrs. Don-o's Mackerel Kedgeree

Serves one. Multiply as needed.

1 tsp butter
1/4 onion, finely sliced
1 tsp spice mix (nutmeg + cloves + pepper + cardamom + turmeric + cinnamon), or just use use Curry Mix or Garam Masala for real authenticity
½ bay leaf
1/4 can mackerel (or salmon or 1 can sardines)
1/4 cup skim milk
1/2 cup leftover cooked rice
1 hard-boiled egg, chopped
Dash lemon juice
Parsley, finely chopped
Salt

Saute onions in butter. While the onions are cooking, place the fish in saucepan, cover with the milk, bring to boil, then simmer. Meanwhile, to the onions add spices. Cook for 2 minutes then add the rice. Stir well. Add fish and chopped egg to the rice, and stir gently. Don't just mush them all together. Gently. Add the lemon juice, season with a little salt and pepper and stir again. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

A good way to use leftover rice.

I'm sure Wal-Mart must have canned mackerel. Found wherever the finest of cheap canned foods are sold.

We had primaries here yesterday. The people I voted for for County Commissioners won, and the people for State Rep and State Senator lost.

Thanks! I’ve printed it out, and I’ll look for the mackerel in the Walmart. If they don’t have it, I’m sure Food Lion will. We have all the other ingredients.

Geeze...I leave to do 15 minutes worth of housework and my last post all but disappeared due to the traffic!

When I finally get here, it’s slow. Was it something I’ve said? Do I have a piece of spinach on my teeth? Did my deodorant quit working? :o|

I went to brush my teeth. Frank is up from his nap now, and we’re leaving for Walmart.

It’s such a simple recipe, I’m sure it would work with the quinoa and cilantro.

Wooohooo! for Able-seaman Anoreth!

Sounds like Wild Kingdom. You'll have to post some of the pictures.

Tell her to be careful of the ants, my daughter encountered some in Costa Rica that are known as "bullet ants", because when they bite you you think you've been shot.

She’ll learn something if she gets too cozy with the ants. It’s hard to believe she’s actually on Borneo!

The County Commissioners were important. The State Rep and State Senator are open seats this year, and it’s entirely possible that the guys who won the primaries will be better able to beat the Democrats than the ones I supported.

When I see who has the toughest opponent, I’ll call to volunteer for their general election campaign. I’m at loose ends this year, since I’d worked for the former state senator and state rep (both returned to private life this year).

They do sell canned mackerel at Walmart. The label is in Spanish.
