RNC Chairman Michael Steele on Monday said harsh criticism from his opponents is motivated by race.
Steele brushed aside calls for him to resign in his first interview since news broke that the Republican National Committee (RNC) reimbursed young donors for a nearly $2,000 party at a bondage-themed nightclub in Los Angeles.
In the interview, Steele said that black political leaders, such as President Barack Obama and him, are held to an unfair higher standard.
The honest answer is, yes, he said on ABCs Good Morning America. Barack Obama has a slimmer margin. A lot of folks do.
Its a different role for me to play and others to play and thats just the reality of it. But you just take that as a part of the nature of it.
My view on politics is much more grass roots-oriented
so I tend to, you know, come at it a little bit stronger, a little bit more street-wise. Thats rubbed some feathers the wrong way.

Steele is a Colin Powell republican!
..and our WHITE Forefathers never argued with each other. /sarcasm.
He’s as dumb as zero.....
Get out racist Steele and do not let the door hit you.
Darn right.
No, it's the blacks in this country who CANNOT get over their racism. Even so called black Republicans like Steele whip out the race card reflexively.
Look, that was for chicks, not guys.
The RNC chairman hardly reviews individual expenditures for that little amount of money.
Everybody knows that.
That means the criticism must arise out of some other concern ~ and certainly not whether or not Republicans are winning the big ones. We've had 3 major races since Obama and we won them all ~ with Steele at the helm of the RNC.
You got somebody else in mind who can do better than that?
I expected better of him not to play the race card. Pathetic.
Look, all you guys (and you're all on this one little thread) why don't you get together and come up with a coherent position, then take it to the RNC.
I'll hold sniggering while you work eh!
You mean it isn't based on the fact that he is a nit wit?
The last refuge of a scoundrel is to yell, RACISM! This guy needs to go, and go NOW!
No, Michael. It is motivated by you being an ineffective twit.
When all they can toss out is the race card, they are DONE.
The lesson continues to be: hire based on skin color, and get mediocrity. There are exceptions... but not nearly enough. Clearly, Steele was an affirmative action hire.
Oh baloney. The criticism is based on the fact that Steele sucks.
Motivated by race? Get real!
We had great hopes for your leadership and many considered that you would right the listing ship that the RNC had become.
As it is, that ship is foundering under your leadership. Is raced a quality of failure? Are we not a very post racial country?
Do you intend to further alienating Republicans who spent years support the RNC and Republican candidates for years, some of us more than 25 years.
Membership and contributions have declined further under your leadership and not from a few who had decided you could possible be the greatest choice of leading, among all other possible candidate, at the time of your ascension to your current post.
Mr. Steele, you are a weak-ass idiot, rudderless and at times appear to be using your post in a rather self serving manner.
Mr. Steele you are the only who arose this morning and while shaving his face, considered the color of your skin.
The rest us never think about the color of your skin.
You however are man of weak character, possessed by an attitude of putting my time in and that is just untenable.
You lack vision, passion and critical thinking required for a leadership position.
Your race aside, you should consider being more introspective and stop white washing your personal failure.
I am still not supporting the RNC and it because of issue such New York 23, were you thought you knew better than the voters who should be supported by RNC apparatus.
Please resign.
Is he saying that he should use GOP money for sex club romps because he is Black???
Someone give the man a tv show, I hear Oprah is quitting.
Shameful, pathetic and abysmal. The race card, bah!
