Apple Sells 300,000 iPads on First Day
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 5, 2010 | Kerry Grace Benn

Apple Inc. said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available.

The company didn't give a precise figure, but the tally was below the estimates of some analysts.

Buyers flocked to stores starting Saturday after weeks of publicity about the tablet-style computer.

Apple hadn't offered iPad sales forecasts, but over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster more than doubled his initial first-day sales estimate to between 600,000 and 700,000 units, including preorders, based on longer-than-expected lines at stores and high expectations for online preorders. He had also lifted his 2010 forecast to 5.5 million units from 2.8 million.

Didn’t the Iphone suffer because the cell phone network didn’t have enough bandwidth to support it?

Ummmm..., the iPhone is suffering?! LOL ...

There are companies that would kill for "suffering" like Apple has with the iPhone ... :-)

However, if you like to just surf the web, check e-mails, download songs and books. Then this maybe just up your alley.

The site we spend the most time on is hulu, and my $200 netbook can muddle through that passably, but the iPad browser doesn't even have flash to play the video.

"Yep... I heard the "same line" given at the introduction of the iPhone ... LOL ..."

Then go out a buy one by all means. From what I've read so far I don't see any reason not to just buy a cheap laptop for the same price.

The cost is way too much for such a device but apple appears to be the one company that can overcharge for products.

There's no such thing as "overcharging" -- especially when you've got huge sales like that over a period of years, like the iPhone (for example).

Nope, in a free market, that's "normal pricing" when people buy and buy and buy the product. It's priced exactly right for the huge marketshare that it has (again, using the iPhone as an example).

You're "overpriced" when no one buys your product... doncha know ... LOL ...

Well, yeah, what is unemployment compensation up to now, 57 weeks? Plenty of that "Obama money" from his stash being redistributed......at great expense to you and me, I might add.....

Ummmm..., what "excuse" did you want to use for the iPhone, then? LOL ...

Way overpriced, under-featured. Typical Apple product.

Well..., don't "grouse about it" just because you can't get it and everyone else can... doncha know ... LOL ...

“It’s my understanding that these things are primarily an Internet tool. Didn’t the Iphone suffer because the cell phone network didn’t have enough bandwidth to support it?”

All of the iPads currently being sold are for WiFi networks.

So, no load on the cell networks.

The 3G version launches in a month or so.

WiFi is fine for a lot of uses. You can load content at home and consume it wherever.

Apple won't lose money on the iPad, that's for sure. There are enough people out there who would buy a turd with an Apple logo on it, that their profit is practically guaranteed.

The masses of people bought, and still buy, the iPhone (for example) because it did what they wanted it to do and no one else could "get it together" to do it as Apple did. They still can't "get it all together" to do what Apple is doing and a lot of companies are playing "catch up".

It's the same way with the iPad and it's going to be the same type of thing with its success too.

There are those who get products that work and work well for them, and then there are those who cry about it and are the "nattering nabobs if negativity" -- grousing about not having it... LOL ...

Oh yeah, there aren’t any...

I see thread after thread, comment after comment, on FR from people who think that Apple should price their products lower. They don't get the business model that has made Apple one of the few outrageously successful American technology manufacturers of this difficult economic time.

Yeah, you would think they were "Marxists/socialists" for all that they talk about it. I mean, if they were true-blue (or "red" rather) capitalists, they would be cheering Apple on for being such a success story and pricing it just right for the massess of people to buy the product.

But, they don't -- and yes, they sure do sound like the DU Marxist-inspired liberal talking ... LOL ...

“BTW: wanting a company to sell it cheaper is not the same as demanding that they do.”

Sure, I wish Apple would sell a 64 GB iPad for $.01...well no ‘cause then it’d go out of business.

Realism - it is a good thing.

I saw a lot more skepticism about the iPad than the iPhone.

The iPhone was the first to have a full-featured, speedy web browser that was actually usable thanks to the fast zooming capability. The fact that it actually allowed for Wifi as well as 3G on AT&T’s network was a feat as well. Being able to use it as an iPod was just icing on the cake.

I remember looking at the video of the iPhone introduction and thinking “finally, someone has made a smartphone that isn’t crippled”.

The iPad was the opposite, and tech sites abounded with “what is this for?” reaction. They were expecting a full Mac-OS X, scaled-back MacBook, and instead we ended up with a scaled-up iPod touch, starting at $499 instead of $199 (is the screen really $300? (Wait, the iPod touch with the largest storage capacity is $399, so they have to add $100 for the next tier.)).

I bet they will drop the price in less than a year, causing a slew of animosity, and announce a new version with a camera or make it fold in half or have pen input, or some other feature to justify a higher price point.

Cheaper than an iMac, yes. You can get laptop PC from Dell or HP for $350 to $500.

My god... who wants crapware like that?

We went out to eat for the first time in months (kids got stellar grades). Every restaurant was packed. When I pass the movie theaters, the lots are full. So is the mall. It’s incredible. I can’t help but feel jaded: with so many out of work, with so many demanding ‘change’ in the last election...what the heck is it that they’re spending their money on? Bread and circuses. We’re a nation of idiots.

You know... during the last "Great Depression" there were about 25% unemployed (of the workforce) at the height of it.

That left 75% still working and still paying bills and still getting their paychecks and still spending their money... :-)

Just because someone else is out of work, doesn't mean that the others who are doing just fine have to stay at home and buy nothing, doncha know ... LOL ...

I have an aces netbook that I bought for 269 that has ten hours of batt life and does everything I need for both work and entertainment that I like better than the ipad.

I checked out the ipad and don’t think its that great. It has a lot of room for improvment though and probably will get better over time.

So the highest end iPod touch is $399 and you’re grousing about a much larger screen and better software for $100?

Some people... ;-)
