Not so productive as we thought...
Apple iFail.
Just pinging you for any iPad posts... doesn’t mean you need to pay any attention to them... it’s just in case you miss one... :-)
I really don’t think that the tablet format is a winner over the netbook or clamshell format, for the following practical reasons:
1. If you’re going to transport it you’ll want something to protect the screen, thus the clamshell wins - you don’t need to get some add-on screen protector.
2. If you’re going to use it to read an ebook or document, either on a table or on a chair or in bed, you’ll want something to hold up the screen so you have your hands free. With the iPad you have to get a stand - more expense and annoyance. Again the clamshell wins.
3. If you’re going to do any serious typing having a separate real keyboard and the full screen adjustable to any angle available for the document is far better than having a virtual keyboard taking up most of the screen, or having to fuss with an add-on real keyboard (extra cost and inconvenience).
In summary, apple would have had a real winner if they had come out with a smaller version of the MacBook Air with a touch screen and roughly the same price.
I’m sure they’ll sell a lot of the iPad given all the hype, especially at the beginning, but my prediction is that it will peter out and won’t be anywhere near as successful as the iphone. And eventually apple (or someone else) will come out with a “cool” netbook that will supplant the iPad and other tablets simply because it’s a more user friendly format.
I’ll stick to my iPad nano — the little one with the phone, camera and 3g.

I’ve stopped wanting one. You can’t write comfortably on it; you can’t read comfortably with it. And it’s heavy to tote around, and doesn’t have any protection. Too bad. They lost me as a potential customer.
BS. My company has been developing real world productivity medical applications for Tablet PCs for over five years. The iPad is a toy.
FWIW, the area of the iPad screen is about 7.7 times larger than the iPod’s & it has just over 5 times the number of pixels.
IOW, typical Apple. Nice try, guys.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
The stickers i get with my apple computers for work...
i stick them on really cool things i never use
You know, it’s like the bulk of a laptop, without the protection of a foldover case and the keyboard. Hell, it’s nice to be able to watch tv and movies and surf the web without needing reading glasses, but seriously, how are you supposed to carry that thing around?
It I want to lug a big ole thing around, I’ll get a netbook. Or either use an Iphone or something.
This is about as exciting as that stupid Segway.
It is way too soon to call the iPad a iFail. For me, personally, I'd need a 25% price cut to get one. Also, I've never really been that in love with the "experience" or the "ecosphere" of the Apple line, I was more into whatever had the raw horsepower.
It remains to be seen. I DO think that Apples entry into the tablet realm legitimizes this market segment, and thats a good thing.
It looks like an old Soviet IPhone copy.
The little iPhone is a slipperly little sucker. Without a rubber cover it gets dropped. I can’t imagine carrying the iPad.
Wish I could Fail like Steve Jobs.
Played with one at the Best Buy yesterday. It’s a neat device.
I don’t intend to get one, but got to playing around with it in the store and didn’t want to put it down.
Just a couple of thoughts:
On the “It’s a toy” thing. So is the Nintendo Wii. So is the XBox 360.
A Kindle with the same screen size is only $10 less than the entry level iPad. The Kindle has advantages in battery life and lighter weight, but it doesn’t play games, support color, allow text editing and document creation, support a full-size keyboard, or allow printing. I have not heard complaints that the Kindle doesn’t replace the user’s laptop. It’s a specific device for a specific purpose. It costs roughly what the iPad costs, and sells quite well.
There are a ton of people out there working on content for the iPad. I’m betting it’s a hit.
There are a lot of people on FR that are negative about everything. Like anything else out there, a host of people on this site immediately scream “THAT SUCKS!!!!!! NOW, how does it suck?”
With a couple of tweaks, I could see it being extremely useful in my business.
I don't think the iPad or tablet computers in general are designed for production of content. They are designed as light-weight, highly mobile readers of content.
Apple iFail.
Companies that review tech products are predicting that Apple will sell 7 million iPads around the world during the remaining 9 months of this years. But let's take a more conservative figure and say 5 million units. And lets further assume that all 5 million are the cheapest version selling for $500. So that would make $2.5 billion in gross sells of the iPad.
Apples has very high gross profit margins, somewhere around 40%. But let's take a more conservative figure and say their gross profit is 20%. That would be $500 million. I wish I were so lucky to have a company that had an iFail of $500 million in 9 months.
"It's not productive enough," they whine.
"It's too delicate and fragile," they sob.
Whine, whine, whine. Sob, sob, sob.
Meanwhile, stockholders in Apple can cheer are this little toy will surely rocket Apple to even higher profits.
Last year, I was blown away by the Kindle. But the iPad makes the Kindle look like an artifact from the cheesy 1970s.
Bookmark this post...one year from now, Apple will be reporting over 12 million iPad devices sold - that's over $7 billion dollars in new revenue from just one product. And that will just be the beginning. Eventually, iPad (and future iterations thereof) will nearly totally replace laptop and desktop computers.
