Senior Suspended For Skimpy Prom Dress

Dress Deemed Too Short, Revealing On Top:

OXFORD, Ala. --

A high school senior in Alabama was suspended for wearing a prom dress that school officials said was too short at the hem and too revealing on top.

"I was so excited because it was my senior prom and I'd never been to a senior prom, so I was excited," Oxford High School student Erica DeRamus said.

DeRamus said she knew her school had dress code policies, but didn't think her dress would violate them. But when she got to prom Saturday, officials told her it was too short and too revealing.

"What cleavage? That's exactly what I said. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, but that's what I feel," DeRamus said.

"If I felt it was too much cleavage in this dress, I wouldn't have purchased this dress," said her mother, Darrie DeRamus. "It would have stayed in that store and I wouldn't have even gotten it off the Internet and paid for it."

But principal Trey Holloday said it violated school policy stating that dresses cannot have cleavage falling below the breastbone or hems more than 6 inches above the knee.

"And so that expectation in our community is that it's there for protection of kids and not for management of kids," he said.

Erica's mother said she was never notified of the prom dress code.

But Holloday said all parents and students were told about it not once, but three times.

Of the 352 students who attended prom, 18 violated the policy, he said. Seventeen of them chose to be paddled, while DeRamus chose a three-day suspension, Holloday said.

"We're too old to be paddled," Erica DeRamus said. "This is high school. We are seniors. If you're going to act up, give us another option besides getting paddled, because this is not the 1940s. We don't take corporal punishment now."

"The thing that I would say is the difference between patience and tolerance," Holloday said. "They're young and sometimes they make young people's mistakes and we're very patient when those things are made, including this. But we're not tolerant of bad behavior or defiance."

Ugly dress, but I see no problem with it.
She isn’t busty, but heavy. It’s not like a DD cup on a size 5 body.

Your argument is straight out of Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals." Just because a certain amount of skin is alright where bikini's are allowed doesn't mean it should be shown in any venue.

I didn't say "any venue." I mentioned only public venues. And the point of the prohibition in the school was solely on the basis of amount of skin shown, an amount much less than at other public venues. And if you say, "Hey, this wasn't a public venue" I'll ask, "Was it a public or a private school?"

There is nothing slutty about the dress. There are people who criticize any expression of self beyond which the observer would engage in as a character flaw - this case, you believe the young woman is a slut. You also indirectly accuse me of using the same type of reasoning when you interpret the photograph I posted as representing “inbred polygamists”. While I would hesitate to use the term inbred, given the findings of fact in the associated court case, I think we can agree these women are in fact involved in polygamous relationships. There is no evidence or information whatsoever (other than your opinion), that this young woman is anything of the kind.

More Alinsky?

You referred to the amount of skin shown at high school swim meets.

I never said it was a public or private venue; I said it wasn't a pool venue.

The school set a standard. The girl failed to meet that standard. The principle failed an entirely different standard with the spanking crap, but that's a whole other issue.

Different venues require different dress standards. Go to a church tomorrow wearing only a speedo and report back to this thread. If they trow you out, pitch a fit and say this is what you wear to public swimming pools.

The key question is whether the girls were wearing the skimpy dresses when they were paddled.

I thought schools were a place for education, not for self expression. If a kid wants to express them self, they should get a guitar and annoy their neighbors. However, the school set a standard. The standard is in place to prevent the display of too much skin. The standard is likely the result of too much "self expression."

You posted a picture of a group of inbred polygamists. Stop playing innocent; the whole world knows they are a group of inbred polygamists. The family patriarchs were marrying and molesting their own daughters! There is only one possible interpretation of your post. Those who disagree with your point of view are inbred polygamists who molest their own daughters. Saul Alinsky would be proud of you. You'd also get a wink and a big thumbs up from the guy Alinsky dedicated his book to!

Go buy your kid a purple thong and rock on with your bad self. Just don't be surprised if your kid isn't allowed to attend the prom wearing only the purple thong.

By the way, your mind just filed a restraining order against you and is living in another city under an assumed name.

I’m sorry I DO know who it is.

I'd call a man who abuses his authority by paddling teenagers under his care a "Pervert" and deal with him accordingly.

What would you call his behavior, self-expression?

No, I'd call it perverted as I did in post #75.

Sorry, my comment was directed towards Stormer. He thinks we should accomodate those who want to “express themselves.”

And the guy whose picture I posted in post #79 is currently serving time in prison for, you guessed it, being a pervert.

Alinsky? Is that the new devil? Thanks for the excursion. The proper response of the school would have been to bar entry at the door of the prom.

Yep, you're an Alinsky follower.

The proper response of the school would have been to bar entry at the door of the prom.

See my comment about the principle. That's the comment you ignored.

Good luck tomorrow with the speedo in church. Let us know how it works out.

Each of us owns our bodies, and to violate that pretty fundamental concept by striking another in an attempt to modify behavior would in virtually every other context land you in jail.

Are you "Pro Choice?" In other words, do you support a woman's right to "terminate her pregnancy?"

It's a simple question. Please provide a straight answer.

Call me crazy, but I'm expecting you to say you are either pro-life or pro-abortion.

Please keep it simple; as you seem to believe those of us with values are inbred cultists.

A few people have likened these spankings to sexual harassment, but there are other grounds on which Title IX can be invoked. See http://nospank.net/title9.htm
