Dress Deemed Too Short, Revealing On Top:
OXFORD, Ala. --
A high school senior in Alabama was suspended for wearing a prom dress that school officials said was too short at the hem and too revealing on top.
"I was so excited because it was my senior prom and I'd never been to a senior prom, so I was excited," Oxford High School student Erica DeRamus said.
DeRamus said she knew her school had dress code policies, but didn't think her dress would violate them. But when she got to prom Saturday, officials told her it was too short and too revealing.
"What cleavage? That's exactly what I said. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, but that's what I feel," DeRamus said.
"If I felt it was too much cleavage in this dress, I wouldn't have purchased this dress," said her mother, Darrie DeRamus. "It would have stayed in that store and I wouldn't have even gotten it off the Internet and paid for it."
But principal Trey Holloday said it violated school policy stating that dresses cannot have cleavage falling below the breastbone or hems more than 6 inches above the knee.
"And so that expectation in our community is that it's there for protection of kids and not for management of kids," he said.
Erica's mother said she was never notified of the prom dress code.
But Holloday said all parents and students were told about it not once, but three times.
Of the 352 students who attended prom, 18 violated the policy, he said. Seventeen of them chose to be paddled, while DeRamus chose a three-day suspension, Holloday said.
"We're too old to be paddled," Erica DeRamus said. "This is high school. We are seniors. If you're going to act up, give us another option besides getting paddled, because this is not the 1940s. We don't take corporal punishment now."
"The thing that I would say is the difference between patience and tolerance," Holloday said. "They're young and sometimes they make young people's mistakes and we're very patient when those things are made, including this. But we're not tolerant of bad behavior or defiance."
I think I would be more outraged about a 17 or 18 year old getting paddled over a dress. What year is this?
You gotta leave something to the imagination, or it cheapens the experience. Looking like Lady GagGag is not entirely wholesome....
Of course, I live in CA, and our girls wear dresses that are really tops.....and extremely tight.
Note to self: We are adults. This is not the 1940s. When I don't want to pay my taxes or obey the government, we won't accept the imposed form of punishment. We will just tell the government what we will accept in the way of punishment.
I wonder if that will work?
Something is very wrong with this. These are 17-18 year old young adults. Who did this paddling? This sounds more perverted than the dress code. Why is such punishment needed for a dress code violation? Isn't missing Prom enough? Very odd. My alarm bells are going off on this story.
It shocks me too. We still paddle kids in school here - kids....not adults. A senior in high school is basically an adult.
when you consider that these are 17-18 yo girls, it sounds more like some KINKaTHON for the paddler than punishment for the girls.
missed reading your post before posting my own, i agree, it sounds positively kinky to me and not remotely punishment.
A girl shows up in a dress that reveals too much cleavage (her best feature IMHO) and they want to take her in the back room and PADDLE her bottom????!?!!?!!?
Sign me up to paddle the gal in post #19. ;)
Yeah, I agree. It wasn't that short or revealing, but damn was it ugly.
And paddling a 16-18 year old for wearing a skimpy dress just sounds filthy.
that girl needs to eat less....I’m a bit ambivalent about the dress
but she knew the dress codes
that is her problem...
maybe she wants fame.
Even though I’m ambivalent about how bad this dress is ...it’s always so telling to see how this thread brings out the race baiters and what culture war types....so predictable.
The nest they embark from must have gotten a twitter message to run to Free Republic to see if they can stir up some race talk so O’Reilly can use it later or some other fruitbat.
Dress did violate the dress code. Suspending her for it, however, is BS. Send her home from the prom, if she has another dress let her come back wearing it, otherwise, no prom. Suspending her is over kill and unnecessary.
Bill O’Reilly is creepy, he would probably volunteer to paddle all of the inappropriately dressed girls.
Unfortunately, too many.
Who’d hit that?
that girl needs to eat less..
her weight is fine. Comments like that show why little girls are anorexic
hon...I don’t know where you live but here for every so called anorexic girl of any color there are 100 times as many chunkies.
obesity in women is exponentially higher than 40 years ago when I was a kid
62% of US women are fat
and over a third are obese

I went back and looked at it more...
I STAND CORRECTED.
I WAS WRONG.
THE GIRL IS NOT FAT. SHE IS PRETTY AND HER WEIGHT IS WITHIN REASON FOR HER. SHE IS ACTUALLY RATHER ENDEARING.
I APOLOGIZE TO HER, YOU AND ANY FREEPER WHO DID NOT LIKE MY COMMENT MADE IN HASTE AND ERROR.
SHE DOES NOT TALK SLUTTY EITHER BTW...SEEMED DECENT ENOUGH
I’m a nurse, I live in Virginia. I give direct patient care to patients suffering from the ills of obesity...obesity is terrible for one’s health. However, if you bothered to actually look at this young lady, you would see that her weight is fine. It is more attractive to have a little meat on the bones than having your ribs, pelvic girdle or clavicles jutting out.
