PHILADELPHIA — Who knew a school cafeteria could be so much fun?

A space where hundreds of Philadelphia charter school students have been eating their lunches during mundane weekdays has been doubling in its off-hours as nightclub, offering dancing and drinking despite an expired liquor license.

City and school officials are not happy about the arrangement between Club Damani and the Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School, which serves about 450 children in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Superintendent Arlene Ackerman said in a letter to Harambee on Monday that "a school and a nightclub cannot coexist in the same space and (the arrangement) must cease immediately," according to a school district statement.

I’m not so sure that I see a problem. I bet they love the revenue.

Wait till some 1st grader finds a used rubber in a corner and comes toddling up to a teacher with it. “Look I founda water balloon!”

Trust me, in Philly, this is the least of the worries they have about schools.

Outside of the expired liquor license, what is the problem here?

Frankie Rizzo’s sweetheart deals with the public employee and construction unions bankrupted the city. Most OVERRATED Mayor ever, especially by his “white rubbish” base of support.

Exactly. Imagine the liability of the school allowing a kid to come into contact with an AIDS-infected condom on school grounds as a direct and predicable result of their off-hours sideshow.

Using school premises for after-hours tutoring and adult-education classes is fine. Nightclubs are not.

I believe that is the old Overbrook Italian American Club. Overbrook is another former great neighborhood decimated by liberal polices..

Yeah, I know, and you are correct...But I liked the guy - and it was long before I was politically aware. Actually, I think you and I had this conversation once before, Clemenza...evidently, Frank AND bro Joe (fire commish?) ran the city like a mafia org.

But - my mother was never afraid to walk down her own street to the grocery store back in the day - afraid just because she was white. She wasn’t “white rubbish”...she was just a lady who lived in Philly all her life, watched her neighborhood get destroyed, and didn’t want to get assaulted by thugs.

Absolutely, and there were countless others like your mom who refused to leave as their kids moved to greener pastures, leaving them vulnerable to the thugocracy.

I still find it incredible how a bunch of rather effete folks from nowheresville can move to awful neighborhoods in Brooklyn, fix them up, and drive out the trash (with the assistance of the police force of course). Philly could be more like New York if 1. It had a large financial services industry 2. It had a large concentration of mediots who "had" to live there and 3. It had New York's demographics.

RE Greener Pastures:

Back in ‘05, I finally convinced Ma to move out with me, away from the city; she was in her mid 70s, and starting to slow down - rheumatoid arthritis. Still she was stubborn as all get-out; did NOT want to leave, but knew it was time to go. 6 mos after I moved her, she passed away rather shockingly and suddenly. Sad thing; I wanted her to have a decent few years in relative security and comfort. Was not to be, though.

I’d been bugging her for years to come with me. She did love her rowhome in Philly so.

Rizzo was a mixed bag but he made his bones as a law and order man. He stood up to the Black Panthers, MOVE and an assortment of other radical groups and thugs. Liberals hated him and working class white people loved him. That is for sure.
It is interesting that Wilson Goode, the man that bombed West Philly, was the only that beat him in an election.
You should read; "Rizzo, The Last Big Man in Big City America".(fascinating book )

Wilson Goode was a douchebag for sure.

I remember a lot of the MOVE thing, for sure. He burned down two or three (??) city blocks, which then cost the taxpayers millions to rebuild...

As for the book, I will. Thanks!
