Does acetone help with gas mileage or hurt your vehicle? And what is a proper ratio of acetone to gas, 2 oz. to five gallons?
I say intermittent, because I only used it during times when the price of gasoline exceeded $3/gal. And during those times, I did notice significantly improved mileage
I cycled three tanks without to start, then three tanks with, followed by three tanks without, all summer long and into the fall, in 2008. Same commute, same car, took pains not to feather the accelerator or otherwise change my driving behavior.
It did improve gas mileage. The effect, whatever it is, persisted and slowly went away over the course of two tanks without. Third tank was back down to “normal” mileage for the commute, which was 34 mpg. I got it up to 38 with acetone, 3 oz. per ten gallons, always at fill up.
I still have the car, by the way, and it’s running fine, no issues whatsoever. It has about 40k miles on it now, synthetic oil, K&N drop in filter.
Acetone doesn’t explode when in contact with water, if you can find elemental sodium or potasium, that would provide some entertainment.
Mene, what they are awkwardly (and facetiously) trying to say is DON’T DO IT.
I have found substantial improvement in mileage when I don’t drive 85-90 mph, but hey, this is south Texas and it’s a long way between here and there.
I believe acetone is a lot more corrosive than gasoline and I would worry about it doing damage.
We used to add a small amount of acetone or MEK to the gas to keep the carbon from building up on the exhaust valves of race engines that ran a rich mixture which made them prone to carbon buildup.
I’ve never heard anything WRT fuel economy.
Not a whole lot during the period. All city driving on much the same routes. The first note was that frequency of fill ups was a lot less often. That much was obvious right from the start. All told, I figure mileage improved by about 1/3rd. That impressed me.
The acetone will dissolve/destroy everything non-metal in the fuel system.
acetone is nothing more than fingernail polish remover. So your story of it exploding on impact with water is a LOAD OF CRAP!
.
If you want to do something that will absolutely maximize your fuel economy in all types of driving, there is a way.
It involves disassembling the intake manifold of the engine, and installing a platinum plated copper screen across each intake port. Its a lot of work, but if you do a lot of driving it may be worth it.
I did this on a Toyota about 30 years ago, and it gave me about 8-10% more miles per gallon over the long run. Platinum wires cause an electrostatic condition that literally breaks the gasoline molecules in pieces giving full “atomization” right at the intake valve.
The process requires cutting rectangles of a fine, 1/8” copper mesh and having them platinum plated at a plating shop. It will cost some money for sure, with today’s platinum prices. It cost me about $80 total for parts and material in 1975; probably triple that now. The rectangular pieces have to be cemented to the intake gasket with non-setting permatex, and allowed to become somewhat hardened for about two days to make it possible to assemble them without displacing them.
This will also give a noticeable boost in power across the entire operating range.
IT DOES HELP.
I used 1 ounce per 10 gallons of SUPER unleaded. It has to be SUPER.
I did get a gain of 26% better mileage.
Tricky part is getting it into your tank without getting any on your paint.
Invest in a transmission funnel.
Haven't heard of that in a while. I remember seeing it around my dad's shop when I was young in the late fifties and early sixties.
Did you leave something out of your instructions?
Super unleaded doesn’t have ethanol in it. That’s probably why. Does your area have a special seasonal blend, or are you in the midwest? It’s almost impossible to get away from ethanol other than super in some places. We have an ethanol blend in winter here. It’s hard to find, but marinas usually have “white gas” regular with no ethanol, if nobody else does.
