What to do when a pit bull attacks

March 24, 2010

News of pit bull attacks just keeps coming.

In March alone, an Indianapolis cop was bitten on a knee while looking for someone for questioning. Another officer shot and killed one of two of dogs that attacked a man while he carried out trash. The dog, by the way, had been at a Humane Society shelter and adopted out months earlier.

The stories are worse farther from Indianapolis. A girl’s jaw torn off in England. Three children mauled in California by a roaming pack of five. A woman’s arm nearly ripped away during a two-minute-long frenzy in Australia.

There were nearly 300 pit bull attacks in Indianapolis last year. Police spokesman Jeff Duhamell expects activity to pick up again as the weather warms and more people resume jogging, bicycling and other outdoor activity.

“They are an extremely vicious breed, and they always have been. They’ll come after you,” Duhamell says. “The more you pull way from them, the more they’ll lock down and start ripping skin and muscle.”

Pit bull owners say the bad rap comes from unrestrained animals or those trained to be mean. It doesn’t help that the breed is favored by drug dealers and other folks who don’t like attention, aficionados say. Treat the dogs responsibly and train them to be passive, and they’re fine.

(If pit bulls can be trained to be unaggressive, can labs be trained not to fetch? Just asking.)

Mayor Greg Ballard and the City-County Council have been reluctant to single out the breed for special regulation.

So what’s a person to do?

Duhamell says pit bulls running loose are the most dangerous, because they’re aggressively territorial. Stay away from them, and get inside a car or house if you feel threatened, he recommends. Or shout “No!” or “Down!” in the hope they’re educated. Other dogs set them off, so leave yours at home.

A Taser might work if you’re accurate enough to get the probes on the dog, he says. And Mace might help.

Duhamell muses about the potential of pepper spray designed to ward off grizzly bears. The spray, which hunters are required to carry in areas of Wyoming, squirts 30 feet from a small canister.

If all else fails, Web sites focused on dog attacks recommend curling up in a fetal position and protecting the head and face—areas where plastic surgery is harder to hide with clothing.

What are your thoughts about pit bulls? Are they maligned? Any ideas for preventing attacks you can share?

Since when are FACTS sensationalism and fear? HUH? It seems every 100 posts is about another mauling or murder committed by a Pitt Bull.

i was going to post something similar, but I thought that if I kept reading the thread someone else (if not more) would have come up with the same suggestion.

Gotta love the thinking here.

He worked as a lineman, he was having to go into alleyways and had to deal with dogs, once he used electrical tape to muzzle a dog and then when he was done he caught the dog and removed the black tape. He is crazy, but no other man I would rather have around when things come to worse.

“If pit bulls can be trained to be unaggressive, can labs be trained not to fetch? Just asking.)”
My labs had the retrieving desire bred into them. I didn’t have to teach them, they did it automatically. Naturally, I had to train them what, when, etc.
My cow dog and sheep dog had the work ethic, and desire to herd bred into them. They had to be taught to follow my directions so we didn’t work at cross purposes, but they were all over getting after the sheep and cattle. My labs had no interest in herding and my herding dogs had no interest in fetching.
I’d venture a guess that pits and other fighting breeds have the desire to rumble bred into them.

So because of these stupid pit bull lovers everyone has to hope there is a house or a car to get in and cannot walk their own dogs in their neighborhoods. Total insanity...but what else is new in the U.S.

Actually happened a few (about 10)years ago here in atlanta. Woman’s pit bull was mauling a child while the owner watched - apparently entertained by the spectacle. A neighbor ran into his house, got a .357 and shot the dog. At that point the owner went into a screeching frenzy attacking the neighbor screaming “Don’t hurt my dog.” So he shot her too. SHE was charged with assault. Convicted too.

Did you catch this useful advice in the comment section?

If you can... Stick your finger (or bigger) into it's anus. Apparently a dog will instantly let go.

The breed gets a bad rap from sensationalism and fear.

Besides banning the breed can we now also ban posts in support of pit bulls?

as with all wild animals they are unpredictable. It is imprinted in their DNA. It is not a matter of treatment , one minute they are cute and tame and another vicious killers. It should be illegal to own them period.

A police dog trainer once told me that to take any dog out, if you hit them in the nose hard enough they are done because in attack mode they can only breathe through the nose . he said it is better to offer your left arm then hit the dog as hard as possible straight in the nose to make it bleed and it will have to let go. Same goes in a rescue , I would hit the dog in the nose with a large object to make it let go to smash its head and try to crush it. Another option is the body slam, if it was locked on to me, since I out weigh it, I would try to slam it with overwhelming force against the sharp edge af a wall, tree, post, fire hydrant, car etc to try and crush its ribs and lungs . Another option to rescue another is to grab both hind legs and rip them apart and kick in in the soft stomach

How reassuring.

"Keep firing until the clip is empty, of course."

1. Fire until clip is empty
2. Replace clip
3. Repeat step 1

The final lunge made by a charging attack dog is a momentary blind, airbourne and open jawed.

When a dog attacks you, standing firm one foot forward the other back. Raise your forward arm waist high and horizonal; offer it to the dog as a target. You are now a matador. Your other hand/arm is your sword. Keep your fingers straight and pointed.

Battle: As the lunging dog goes for you target arm >>> PLUNDGE YOUR SWORD HAD DOWN FIDO's THROAT and KILL THE DOG by suffication/strangulation.

Note: You will survive despite inevitable injuries.

Consider the modern compound bow:

Everybody should have one.

The bowhunters super store.

No noise, much more efficient and powerful than a traditional bow and easier to aim and shoot.
