Vanity: Overheard at McDonald's: Job Loss Due To Health Care Vote
Vanity

Posted on 03/23/2010 2:05:12 PM PDT by ReagansShinyHair

My family went to McDonald's for lunch today, to consume our usual $1 McDoubles and shared fries and drinks.

The bottom line is that it sounds like businesses have anticipated this vote and are initiating the process of cutting jobs to keep costs down.

The managers were having a meeting and we ended up sitting down right next to them. I don't know their McJobTitles, but basically most of them were store managers and one of them was a traveling manager for the area.

My ears pricked up as I heard heated tones! The store managers were protesting that too many people would lose their jobs. The traveling manager said that this is just a "business decision" that is being made because the "targets" must be met no matter what for the stores to stay open. I'm assuming that the "targets" are some sort of net profit goal for each store.

Key points: -Staffing costs are going to increase a lot on a per-employee basis, so that means fewer employees.

-The company is not going to accept a lower profit target.

-Even though the extra costs might not happen until the future, the cuts are going into place ASAP because the profit targets must always be met.

-Other businesses have not been able to avoid bankruptcy, including fast food restaurants in the area, and McDonald's in my area is going to do what it takes to stay in business.

-Nobody is happy about firing workers, but it's going to happen anyway in order for the company to stay in business.

To my knowledge, hamburger delivery cannot yet be outsourced to India...

No, but it won't be long before your hamburger is handed to you by a mechanical robot rather than a human robot. And the development and production of those robots will probably be outsourced to Japan.

“Easy solution...find out which of the 7 voted for Obama or Democrats and lay them off first. Of course, if they are all conservatives, then you are stuck with an unfortunate dilemma.”

I am sure they know my politics and before Obama was elected I made sure they knew what was possibly ahead for medicine and small business. I don’t know if any (or all) are Democrats and frankly I don’t care. These layoffs are coming because we as a country are sprinting towards socialism and the finishing tape is just an arms length ahead. I will cut employees based on their worth and productivity. Please don’t tell Obama that last tidbit.

Hillary stated when questioned about the fact that her health care reform would drive some businesses to close that she couldn’t be concerned about the problems faced by ‘undercapitalized businesses’.

Here in my rather urban ‘burb of L.A., virtually every restaurant and store is offering huge discounts/freebies in the past couple of months — more in past days/weeks.

A big deal is the two for one meal — at all manner of eateries from low to mid-high end. Coupons abound and internet deals — one could probably dine out for weeks and pay for only one meal, assuming two persons served. Craziest thing I’ve seen in the decades I’ve been around here.

RE: “It doesn’t help that every fast food restaurant in the country now has to redesign and change all their signage and menus to include calorie count to please Nazi Pelosi.”

*************

Oh yeah, and just heard some snippet on radio news — something about a push to end those little ‘toy’ giveaways in kid meals as they supposedly encourage junk food eating by kids. Not sure if this was some local push or national.

Hey nanny-staters — how far ya gonna go? Get your mitts off the kids’ ‘toys’ in their little meals. Nobody can have any fun anymore!

If you are a small business or franchise you will fire the 50th employee.

RE: “If electric rates are doubled, I’m getting one of those old miner’s hats with a lantern on the front.”

**************

Electric rates never stop going UP here in Los Angeles. Another increase scheduled very very soon.

We need two new a/c units (very old ones blew up last year in 110 degree heatwaves). We thought about central air but don’t want to go thru the trouble and expense of that for just a few months’ of heat per year. But...now we are thinking of just toughing it out this summer with NO a/c at all — if it’s too horrid we can just go to a cheap motel nearby for a night or two.

Neighbor spent $400 for one electric bill last during the last summer season with her central air. No thank you!

I love the idea of the miners’ hats with the light -— perfect!

“I’m guessing down the line...you the employer will be mandated to supply what Obama and his henchmen want, or else.”

I’m sure you are right. I can’t ever imagine this going away. Most troublesome to me is the interjection of IRS into the mix and we all know they will be given whatever power they need to collect the money. I’m basically self-employed and my first responsibility is to my grandchildren who I am raising and their basic needs will come first. Had employee’s meeting this a.m. and we went through the bill and what it will mean to me as their employer. I will survive - not sure how many of them will and although they don’t like my priorities, do believe they understand. Lots more small business owners are in the same position and we can no longer hide, watch and wait.

"everybody that has to lay off/fire people, should tell them it's because of 0bamacare"

It should be printed on their pink slips: "Sorry, but you were laid off from our company thanks to Obamacare. Once its repealed, you may apply for employment with us again"

There are a number of automation steps that McDonald’s has been toying with over the years that may become reality.

And centralizing order taking in a large tele-office.

Oh, be quiet, tool. I could care less how anyone eats. Even if they eat that crap in a way that can be described as ‘usual.’ However, a little good-natured ribbing never hurt anyone. Well, except you, sissy. Get a sense of humor and let others fight their own battles if they so choose. Do you honestly think I was serious about triple bypasses?

I would think a lot of part-timers will bit the dust in an attempt to keep the number of employees under the limit of (30 or 50?) employees to avoid having to provide healthcare in many small businesses. I also wonder if they have to provide healthcare to part-time as well as full-time employees under this bill.

Not a good time for that, as of today you’ll end up in line waiting a year or more for a cardiologist.

What do you know - the first confirmed public sighting of Obamacare casualties. But wait a mo', I thought the fascists, I mean democrats, were for the little guy - you know, the sort who works at a McD's to pay the bills because he can't get anything better (just yet, but he's working on it, or at least, he was, until he got laid off and could no longer afford to go to night school).
