“hot” isn’t a flavor? Then why spice foods with it?

The American palate is also sensitized to recognize the endless stream of crap sandwiches coming from the Obama Administation and the Congress.

When I was growing up, there were four flavors. Then they came up with a fifth. Now they have a sixth.
I tell ya -- Baskin Robbins was ahead of everybody!

The irritants in spicy foods trigger an endorphin release to kill the pain. Endorphins are like natural morphine, so people tend to do things that release them, like have sex and eat chocolate.

Unagi (eel) has a taste all its’ own.

Umami is a flavor that was discovered by the inventor of MSG, basically it is a flavor in all sorts of protein-rich foods.

I’ve been tasting “savory” and “fat” all my life, and my ancestors have choosing diets based on these tastes for thousands of years.
Who are the idiots who think they just discovered these flavors? And why do I have to use a jap word for “savory”?

Do I get money if I add a seventh flavor?
“Soap”. It’s the flavor of cilantro.

I’ve been saying that for years. Everybody from the midwest knows cholesterol is a spice, and a damn tasty one at that.

“Fat” isn’t a flavor. Its a carrier of flavors.

Fat isnt a flavor. Its a carrier of flavors.
So goes the conventional wisdom. However, there is a cephalic phase to fat ingestion in which simply tasting fat without ingesting it will trigger lipoprotein lipase to release fatty acids from adipose tissue. The experiment consisted of subjects chewing full fat or fat free cream cheese on crackers and spitting it out before swallowing and without knowing which version they received. The were all tested for changes in LPL levels and serum free fatty acids. Those will the full fat had an increase in LPL and serum free fatty acids. The tongue was able to detect otherwise insensible levels of fat and trigger a physiological response.
