Storm over women drug addicts paid £200 to be made infertile

LOCKED in the grip of drug addiction, the only thing mum-of-nine Felicia LeMay cared about was getting her next hit of crystal meth. The victims of her deadly habit included her baby son, who was born hooked on the drug and put straight into care by social workers.

But the birth helped create a turning point in Felicia's life, and when she fell pregnant again she agreed to take part in a controversial sterilisation scheme which has caused a storm in America - and could be about to hit Britain.

US campaigner Barbara Harris runs Project Prevention - a group which pays drug addicts $300 (about £200) to be sterilised so they cannot have any more children.

"How far away can we be to people selling thier own body parts?"

Don't worry. Government will never let that happen as it implies too much personal sovreignty.

Yes...SHE had nine. But she’s not the only woman that’s being targeted for this pogram. There are other birth control methods that are very reliable and even easier to administer without ruining a woman’s fertility.

Good evening.

Sterilization is permanent and if a woman addict ever turns her life around, she’s got no second chances at motherhood.

I understand your point, but is there really a downside to this?

Sterilization is an offence against God. It is never justified and it is sinful.

Would you be okay with executing meth addicts or involuntarily confiscating the children they bear ?

Then she can most certainly adopt.

They don’t turn their lives around. Very seldom does it happen, most just keep going down.

Adoption isn’t that simple. My brother and his wife were left heartbroken (and no baby) and lost $30K.

I guess some are ready for eugenics, as long as they don’t go to visit their grandma to be told, ‘Sure she had Alzheimers, but it was her choice’.

Disrepect for the body and life soon affects all, intentional or not.

If some here read history and where Lenin, Stalin, Sanger, Hitler and Mao got their ideas, maybe they’d think twice.

I remember how many here said Schaivo should be starved thirteen days to her death, hey, that’s her husband’s right. That she was never terminal, he abused her and her parents wanted to care for her, never mattered.

God is no longer in the hearts of men, we get what we deserve.

I don’t think these women are living their lives for God. They are having babies that are addicted to crack and meth. Which do you think is more of an offense to God? I think of the scripture about the millstone.

Adoption of children waiting in foster care is alot easier than private adoptions. That route isn’t for everyone. I wouldn’t consider it now until my children are much older.

Raising children is not cheap or for the faint of heart.

I’m well aware of that. Too bad money can’t buy class.

Imahawk your statement was really harsh. We have three children that we provide for very well. The expenses of raising children aren’t all up front though. If it was going to cost me $30,000 up front to raise a child, I wouldn’t be able to afford that.

This couple was swindled out of $30,000. I can understand them not being able to afford more in lawyer’s fees. People that want to adopt save every extra penny, hold fundraisers, and even use their life savings to adopt a baby.

Just because they can’t afford more for a lawyer doesn’t mean that they can’t provide a comfortable home for a child.

Yeah. Adopting children in foster care is faster and less expensive but they really wanted a caucasian newborn. Those are more difficult to find in the foster care system.

Both of them have fertility issues and medical intervention wasn't a great option for them.

Sadly, this went on for a few years with them getting their hopes up and dashed several times. At the end, one of the adoption agency's partners ended up stealing everyone's money and I believe there are criminal charges pending. But for my brother and his wife, they don't have the money nor the heart to go through all that again. I can't say that I blame them.
