How Do I Get My Computer Monitor to Work Again? (vanity)
my computer ^ | March 6, 2010 | self

Posted on 03/06/2010 7:05:32 AM PST by Freedom'sWorthIt

Sorry for the Saturday morning vanity - but I know someone out there in Freeperland can help me.

I have a Sony Viao laptop hooked up to a docking station to which is attached my Dell Monitor. I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse.

For some unknown reason, my monitor stays in "sleep mode" all the time! I cannot get it to be "on" and viewable! Black screen at all times.

There are 4 buttons on the lower right corner of the monitor and I have tried pushing in each of these buttons and the yellow light that is on the far right button will turn blue - but the screen stays black or says it is in "auto detect entering into power mode" or something like that.

But it doesn't matter. Black screen continues.

Maybe there's no signal getting to the monitor. Did you try hooking the monitor up directly to the Sony's VGA port?

Can't Work?

Maybe Obama's Steve Jobs Bill might help. Of course there's always unemployment funds!

“Are you logged” in ping!

Try shutting everything down, disconnect all the goo and try it without the docking station. It could have something to do with the profile that is used when the docking station is attached.

Well = every now and again, the monitor mysteriously comes “On”!

So I know it is getting the signal.

However, it is a real surprise when the monitor comes on and it never lasts...it does not flicker. It just goes black again after awhile.

I was wondering if some key on this wireless keyboard was mashed somehow causing this problem because I had not been having this problem up until say about a month ago....LOL Yes am slow getting things fixed...

Sorry for the joke.

You might check the Control Panel. See if the Dell moniter is properly configured. Check for connectivity. Sometimes the cable is bent outta shape and connectivity is lost.

Ok, I will try doing the shut down disconnect thing in a bit. Thank you.

Of course if someone comes along who has the “magic” button to push - that would be great too and would save me some trouble....

This is basic trouble shooting 101:

Ensure that the Vaio laptop's monitor is working
if the screen is black that means your internal video card is hosed and you need a new lap top.

Then like the other guy said try hooking up the lap top directly to the monitor

If that works its probably your docking station. I have a Vaio also but I not ever used a docking stations with it. To check the docking station you need extra VGA cables that are good. If swapping the cables out does not fix it then you know for sure its the station and not the monitor.

How do I know if the Dell monitor is properly configured? What do I look for?

First problem is the stupid VAIO. I have one of the sorry pieces of poo poo and like to have never got the monitor port to work.

However in your case sounds like you probably have a problem with your external monitor. Hopefully your VAIO does not makes noises like it has a dozen rats scurrying around inside it when you move the screen.

Is the setting for your screen display correct? If it is not the screen will go sleep. From safe mode click on help and support and search for display or screen setting check out screen resolution and see if it is correct. you can also get there from graphic display, screen setting.

The Viao laptop screen is working fine.

When I went to the “system” on the control panel - it shows re: monitor: 4 or 5 “plug and play monitor” iistings??

Does that mean something?

I know the Dell monitor is getting power and I also know it is getting the laptop’s signal - because as I said it comes on every blue moon.

If it comes on sometimes then the problem is the monitor. If it is a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) then the power supply or some other circuit board part is failing and it could become a fire danger is you continue to use it. If it is a Flat Panel LCD then the cold cathode back-light or it's power supply is going out. (This is very much like a fluorescent lamp and ballast)
In both cases, unless you are a skilled electronics repair person with access to the needed parts, replacement of the monitor is the solution.

Your laptop monitor is working?

Has the attached monitor ever worked with this setup?

==
Make sure the external monitor cable is plugged into the VGA port on the laptop, of course.

For WinXP, right click on the main screen (laptop).

You should see a little box menu that allows you to select ‘screen’ options.

Selection the one for Graphic display.

That should open an attached sub menu.

Select Output to... [sub menu]
Select Dual Display Clone [sub menu] [or similar wording]
Select Notebook + Monitor [do not select Monitor]

LOL - no haven’t heard the rats noise...LOL.

Actually it all worked very well til about a month ago.

Then I think my keyboard fell on the floor and when I picked it up I thought maybe I pushed a wrong key. I know there is a key with a half moon on it - sleep key I guess? But I have pushed that key again and again to try to get this thing to “wake up”....with no luck.

So didn’t know if there was some other simple solution....appreciate ALL the suggestions!! What an adventure in troubleshooting...

"How do I know if the Dell monitor is properly configured? What do I look for?"

Unplug the larger monitor. Then, on your Dell, go to "Start, Control Panel, and Power Options".......set your monitor to never go to sleep. Shut down, and plug back in your auxillary monitor and turn it on. If that still won't work, try a combo of key strokes by using "ALT+F8" to illuminate the monitor.
