A newly authenticated Van Gogh has gone on display 35 years after a discredited art collector bought it in Paris, convinced it was painted by the famed Dutch master but never able to prove it. Le Blute-Fin Mill was painted in 1886, according to Louis Van Tilborgh, curator of research at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

It was bought in 1975 by Dirk Hannema, who was known as a brilliant museum curator but a fool when buying for his own collection. When he died in 1984 he claimed to have seven Vermeers, several Van Goghs and a few Rembrandts.

Can see why there was a dispute whether it was a Van Gogh. Bit different to what he would paint in 2 years.

It's not a Ross, though.

Also, if it's a Van Gogh, why did he sign it "Reuters"?

“Experts” are likely to overstate their expertise, given that it’s what earns them a living.

You can tell. It's definitely not from his colgate period.

Anyone can be an art expert. Look at the idiots who claim Jackson Pollack was a genius.

I pissed off more than a couple of art instructors and various snotty folks with derision of Pollack’s work.

Can there be higher praise than being “mocked by the art world?”

Have you heard how some scientists claim there is a hidden complex math code in Jackson’s work? It just really ticks me off that something a 3 year old could do is worth over 100 million dollars.

My theory has always been that Pollack was a truly brilliant artist who couldn't bear to part with any of his great works - so to raise cash he sold his drop cloths to the public. :)

If this article is true it means Jackson was a true genius who dated his work via a complex fractal pattern hidden in his work.

I got a nice reaction from my professor about Picasso’s Gurnica. I still say it just sucks.

We had several class discussions about that one.
