Should commissioned officer servicewomen be capped at O-6?
February 20, 2010 | myknowledge

I was wondering, that few militaries (like the United States) have women officers at flag rank (O-7 through to O-10).

In order to limit the number of women in the military, even in the commissioned officer ranks, I would suggest a capping, or 'glass ceiling' for officer servicewomen to O-6 (colonel or navy captain).

Do you think imposing a 'glass ceiling' on servicewomen is 'sexist'? Is it 'unpatriotic'?

I see. You’re one of those, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ types, LOL! Stick a flower in the end of your rifle while you’re at it; see how far that gets ya. ;)

Another ridiculous supposition.

All units are combat units when in a combat theater or have you not been paying attention for the last 9 years?.

Traditional “low combat probability” jobs are not any longer. Maintainers, Transporters, Logistics all are in the mix, especially as the asymmetrical aspect of resistance against our forces increases-the underbelly IS the target, the badguys know they cannot win against our maneuver forces, so they do not attempt. Warfare will continue to be as such, probably widening in that respect.

In order to remove females from combat probability, we would need to forbid them from ever leaving the FOB, making them irrelevant and a burden....

If we want to protect or prohibit females from “combat”, then we must forbid military service by them.

Yep, you pegged me! :-)
Really, I was in for 10 years, decided to get out because I wanted to take care of my beautiful but tough pregnancy son but my husband continued on and we were Navy for 30 yrs.
I am unapologetically hawkish. I know some of the flags in the Navy and shake my head at how they got there - spking of DADT, I know Mullen! Cripes! - and weep for the folks in the field under this admin.
I don’t have a prob if someone wants to suggest stuff on the Free Republic - I think it’s good for us and I really enjoy the ideas - I get your frustration but maybe save it for something more stupid, maybe?

That whole “historically, all successful generals were male...” thing just perplexes me. When you only allow a specific type of person to become something, of course all the ‘successful’ ones would be of that specific type.

It's a waste of talent. Many women can and do operate successfully at flag rank.

You’re an idiot.

Did you know there is a Navy destroyer named for a female Admiral? The USS Hopper - DDG-70.

Ever her of Computer “compiler”; the term “debugging” or the “COBOL” language? Thank Admiral Grace Hopper.

Are there not female “aviators”? Is not a requirement to be carrier skipper that they be aviators? Are there not female skippers of other ship types out there?

If they’re already serving in such roles why can’t they rise to flag rank? What other tickets do they need punched?

If a woman is capable of rising up the ranks why not allow her to have the opportunity?

Woman are better managers then men most of the time.

I for one see NO problem with having females in the upper ranks if they earned it because of leadership skills.

Your arguments don’t and wont change my experiences as an Infantryman. If you want to ban females from the military, then that is a choice I can live with.
