William Kelly Shoots Daughter's Abusive Boyfriend, Randall Carter, in the Balls

When police in Navarre, Florida received a call for a noise complaint, they arrived to find a bleeding man running toward them along with his girlfriend. The man's groin was dripping blood, and he was screaming that he'd been shot...

Amanda Kelly told a deputy that her dad, William Russell Kelly Jr., had shot her boyfriend Randall Carter at their home. The reason for dad's ire, according to the younger Kelly: "He hates him, dude."

William readily admitted to the shooting, but claims a different motive. He says he unloaded his .45 revolver, which he affectionately calls "The Judge," because Carter was assaulting this daughter. "I shot him in the nuts with bird-shot because he was beating my daughter," Kelly told police.

He's been charged with aggravated battery. Carter, meanwhile, has already received his sentence for messing with an armed man's daughter.

The final chamber was loaded with a lead slug.

William Kelly was charged with aggravated battery with intent to cause bodily harm or disability. He was taken to Santa Rosa County Jail and released on $20,000 bond later Monday.

Deputies were responding to a noise complaint at Lost Bottoms Lane in Navarre at 12:51 a.m. Monday when they heard what sounded like a “large-caliber gunshot,” the report said.

Carter and Amanda Kelly were running toward the deputy, screaming for help. Carter said he had been shot. Deputies saw him bleeding from the groin area.

When asked why Carter had been shot, Amanda Kelly said, “Because he hates him, dude! That’s it.”

When confronted by deputies, William Kelly admitted shooting Carter to protect his daughter.

“I shot him in the (groin) with birdshot because he was beating my daughter,” Kelly told deputies.

Kelly had a silver-colored .45-caliber revolver, but only one of the five shots had been fired. The empty casing inside the chamber contained birdshot, the report said. The next three chambers had birdshot. The final chamber was loaded with a lead slug.

I think Remington had a product a while ago which was a .45 ACP with an elongated, crimped case that contained shot of various small diameters. They marketed it as “Snake Shot”.

I guess if you were hiking and wanted protection from snakes or the ability to defend yourself against other creatures, having the capability of loading shot or slugs into your .45 would be useful.

First time I met oldest daughter’s first boyfriend, I showed him some of my groupings. Later she told me he was scared of me. I told her he should be scared of me.

The revolver will also chamber .410 shotgun shells. That is probably what he used.

Yeah, probably best to use them in a wheel-gun. Oddly, I’ve never had a stovepipe or bridge faiure, just the slide sometimes (say, 1 out of 4 times) doesn’t strip the next round out of the mag.

You musta been shooting close, ‘cause at 5 yards I get widely scattered little .5mm holes in the target. Round’s designed for more like 5 feet, not 5 yards.

Affectionately calls it the Judge? That’s the darn name of it, idiot.

All journalists should be required to take a course to learn about weapons and ammunition. Then maybe they’ll know their names and the difference between cartridges, bullets, semi-automatics, revolvers, and assault weapons - to name but a few terms they constantly screw up.

A certain New York newspaper referred to the Ruger 10/22 as a ‘machine gun’ in an article not too long ago...

The fact that he could be shot in the groin and still run tells me all I want to know.

when the "Judge" came out I thought I wanted one. After reading all the INDEPENDENT reviews I could find I changed my mind.

The barrel is too short to be an effective shotgun, and the throat is too long to be an accurate pistol round.

That's a lot of money for a gun that won't penetrate a couple layers of clothing.

If you are looking for a home defense weapon, get a good handgun of at least 9mm caliber and learn how to shoot it. Or, get a good short-barrelled shotgun, AND LEARN HOW TO SHOOT IT!

If you choose the shotgun, use something like #4 BUCKSHOT. Home defense situations are RARELY longer than seven yards, and happen very fast. You need a gun that will stop the aggressor. Unless you hit the central nervous system, the perp is not going to go down immediately. Even a heart shot can give the perp time to kill you before he expires.

USE ENOUGH GUN!! That ain't enough gun.

LOL - another journalist said ‘bullets are flying off the shelves’ when referring to the ammunition shortage. Broke me up.

"Ooh, man. If he’d only had one of those new kevlar Blackberries."

Don't you mean kevlar dingleberries? (I mean, you do know where he was shot, right?

They called it a “deadly tech 9 machine gun”, so I emailed them and sent them links.
I never did receive a response, and they never retracted their text.
It was a 10/22 in a bullpup stock, available online to anyone interested enough to do that to a perfectly serviceable 22.

I also told them that a tech 9 isn’t a machine gun, and sent them the definition of such.
*snicker*

The reason for dad's ire, according to the younger Kelly: "He hates him, dude."

One has to admit, that does clarify the matter.

I’m thinking the same thing. If he was still able to run, he wasn’t hurt near bad enough.

My case wouldn't have been so bad if they'd have just stopped playing! Just kidding -- the other three were actually quite sympathetic once they quit laughing. Course that took almost as long as it took me to be able to stand up again!
