The question isn’t whether it is particularly important ... the question is whether there is anything else more important that must be covered at this very moment. 24-hour news networks have a lot of time to fill ... so they’ll seize on any remotely interesting breaking story that they can.
It isn’t as if they’re pre-empting coverage of anythign else worth watching. Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, and Family Feud reruns are likely worth pre-empting for Tiger Woods.

There’s a reason the TV comes first in “TV news”. News channels are no different than any other channel, their job is to get you to watch commercials, any information they convey is purely an accident and should not be considered indicative of future performance.
