A TOP skier was left in tears when her Olympic dream ended in just FIVE seconds after she spectacularly tumbled over.

French woman Marion Rolland crashed yards from the start as she began her bid for gold at the Winter Games in Vancouver.

The 27-year-old left the starting gate and within a blink of an eye lost her balance. She toppled over and landed in the snow in front of stunned spectators

Anybody who has ever skied recognizes catching an edge on ice.

They're skiing on snow that was trucked in and has turned to ice.

The crappiest stuff you could ever wish to ski on.

Way to go, Vancouver.

Hope your city fathers made lots of money on their condo deals on eminent-domained real estate.

For her I’ll bet it is an epic failure. All that work gone in a slip.

I agree on Chamberlain...Obama etc.

Very sad. They work so hard for so many years, and this woman was one of the best. The French have been doing very well this year, she must be humiliated.

They say at the link she hurt her knee in the fall. I wonder if she hurt it before the fall and it just collapsed when she put stress on it.

By the way, an American won the event.

When the difference in the skiers time is measured in hundreds or thousands of a second, you'd had better start digging from the git-go.

...let it all hang out, no guts - no glory as they say.

Yeah she was skating so hard to accelerate and she catches an edge..man, that would be hard to deal with..But having skied some, I know those edges will get you if your weight is placed wrong...

“You do realize that “epic” means “long”, right? (Epic ballads have many verses, epic tales take hours to relate, etc.)”

Yes, it’s being used incorrectly, but then again, words mean what people think they mean, so the word “epic” is taking on a new meaning to reflect the common usage.

I can't find any humor in that because I've seen it happen before and did it once myself when I was a teenage ski racer.

The race of your lifetime, you're pumped and the only thing you are focusing on is acceleration out of the gate with 6 ft. boards on each foot.........

The buzzer sounds, you leap thru the gate, you take two, three, maybe four skating strides then on the last one your ski is not on the proper angle and you catch an edge which throws you off balance and into the snow.........race over!

My heart goes out to her and I even shed a tear for her.

Alpine skiing is such a demanding and physical sport that most people who have never done it can't really comprehend how complex or dangerous it is.

I only wish that the coverage of these downhill, GS and Super G events would include camera angles covering the across slope angles showing the actual vertical drops that these skiers are experiencing. Most of the angles are from above and behind the skiers as they ski down or from below looking up as they come down the mountain.

There is an occasional shot of a vertical drop but the focus is on the skier so the viewer does not have a chance to really see what the skier just skied thru..........

While they do have full coverage of each run, the camera angles do not do justice to the vertical terrain that these skiers are flying down........

Back around 1985 or 86, I skied Sunshine Village in Alberta, Canada right after the Husky World Cup Championship and had the nervous pleasure of sking the slope where the downhill was held.........The vertical drop was incredible and to think that skiers were flying straight down this slope with all their focus on trying to go faster..........Its unimaginable
