What is a Libertarian?
2/16/2010 | me

So, what exactly is a Libertarian?

I have a friend who calls himself a Libertarian. I've known him for about a year. We both have similar interests, share the same political views (generally), and have respect for a benevolent and gracious higher power.

Lately, my friend has been sending out articles written by "Libertarians" and those associated with the Campaign for Liberty. Most of these articles are highly critical of the war on terror, ridicule the efforts of the Bush administration to combat the terror threat, and seize on any opportunity to highlight misguided efforts at Guantanamo, Afghanistan, or Iraq.

I get the impression that my friend believes the government, in its pursuit of terrorists, is seriously endangering the rights of free, law-abiding citizens like you and I. While I can understand the concern, especially in light of the Obama administration's alarming statements regarding military veterans and so-called right-wing extremists (aka Teapartiers), I am searching for the right response that addresses the terror issue without negating the importance of the preservation of individual liberty.

I would appreciate your input.

"In my experience, Libertarians want to open the borders first."

Not the libertarians that I hang out with. I and them are pro-fence. Just because you are a member of a party does not mean that you agree with all members of that party.

Do you agree with John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Lindsey Grahm because they are republicans? Did you even agree with Reagan 100% of the time?

>>There is a lot of Dineros and Dollares being wasted on our side for something we can’t stop and should be legitimized, regulated and taxed.<<

Get ready for incoming — the We Will Control Your Life For Your Own Good folks are out in force tonight and are girded for battle.

On this issue, “social” Conservatives are both wrong AND impractical. Trillions of dollars and millions of lives wasted and, if I wanted to, I could score any illegal drug I wanted in 20 minutes.

But now the WOD has become a teat which feeds many — and we know what happens when we cut off mother’s milk...

Of course. I'm suprised they get 3%. How do all the potheads get top the polls? LOL.

It's amazing how many things Paul or others say, that many here actually agree with. Then they lock onto 1 or 2 issues and flame everybody. Of course they disagree with the republicans on one or two issues also.

It's not so much the fact that drugs are illegal that bothers me. It's the whole enforcement regime that gets more and more like the NKVD every year.

I can't believe that most (non-libertarian) conservatives are really happy with things like property confiscation, unlimited no-knock raids, and IR-equipped helicopters snooping around for grow lights.

We could take the drug enforcement regime back to what it was like in the '50s (when drugs were as illegal as they are today) and I could live with that.

Small Government plain and simple and limit Federal powers to what is outlined in the Constitution.

It's both economic freedom and social freedom. Government doesn't regulate too far on your right to make a living nor your right to live how you choose.

If your flags on your profiles are accurate, freedumb2003 is from California and ClearCase-guy is from Massachusetts. I can see how those have different circles of libertarians. Especially if Freedumb is from the southern part of CA.

FWIW, here in Oklahoma I don’t know anyone who is in favor of open borders.

A whole bunch of Republican candidates and office holders! I am just surprised that you never hear them come right out and say it on the campaign trail. I think they should proudly march into a Tea Party town hall meeting, and announce to the crowd there that they intend to repeal social security, medicare, and child labor laws.

parsy, who advises they make this statement near an unlocked fire door with a getaway car outside, and the engine running

and things like minimum wages, wage and hour laws, child labor laws, worker’s comp, social security, FDA, and medicare are horrible intrusions of gov’t power.

So you support socialism?

I like to think of myself as a "Republican Party Reptile" as defined by PJ O'Rourke:

"“I think our agenda is clear. We are opposed to: government spending, Kennedy kids, seat-belt laws, busing our children anywhere other than Yale, trailer courts near our vacation homes, all tiny Third World countries that don’t have banking secrecy laws, aerobics, the UN, taxation without tax loopholes, and jewelry on men.

We are in favor of: guns, drugs, fast cars, free love (if our wives don’t find out), a sound dollar, and a strong military with spiffy uniforms."

The illegals should be responsible for their own healthcare. If a private concern can bring them here legally to work, then they aren’t illegals any longer. And therefore would be elligible to legally purchase insurance thru their employer, or on the open market.

The common libertarian, and liberal, argument that the founding fathers would never commit troops to an undeclared war, nor involve themselves in ‘foreign entanglements’ is untenable in the light of a few historical facts. First is the Qusi War with the French, fought with John Adams as President. “Power must be opposed to power, and interest to interest.” John Adams, originator of the idea of “checks and balances.”

Second is the Barbary War, undeclared, fought under Jefferson.

The War of 1812 was fought under Madison using privateers extensively. Think Blackwater.

Good luck.

“I completely agree that with sentiment. Who is with me??”

I might be but we’d have to discuss the part about child labor laws....maybe that ought to be the perview of the local or state government but there should be some.

I'd stand up and cheer any Republican who said these things.

I am a Libertarian, and I do NOT support an open boarder. Wayne Allyn Root the former vice presidential nominee for the Libertarian party in 2008 says this:

*Illegal Immigration- I support securing our borders. We must first secure our borders to control the entry into our country of foreigners who pose a threat to the security, health, property or economic well-being of Americans. We must secure our borders before we can deal with the issue of how to deal with illegal immigrants already in our country.

*I oppose public funding and entitlements for illegal aliens.
*But I support providing a “Path to Citizenship” for 12 to 15 million illegal immigrants already here. Make it strict, difficult, and expensive- award citizenship only to those with no criminal record; who have proof of paid taxes; who learn mastery of the English language and American history; and who agree to pay a steep fine.

Seems reasonable to me.

I doubt you will ever get the chance unless a member of the political suicide wing of the GOP does it.

parsy, who can’t wait to see the fate of the Republicans who might say this. . .

I couldn’t care less what they think and their official government programming is a personal problem.

Let’s see:

Booze = Good

Cigarettes = Mmm, Okay.

Prescription Drugs = Doctor Approved. Really? By the cute girl, who gets paid to up the number of scripts for her product, in her territory?

Well, okay. Then why not let people whose insides have been destroyed by Chemo, to the point they are now on a feeding tube for the rest of their lives and can no longer eat real food, smoke a toke? Or is it better, to all the minds controlled by the government, that be allowed to waste away and die?

You objected when that was pulled on Terry Schiavo. How is this different or is death the natural order of things and if so who should be the final arbiter of when that takes place?

What about the fellow with MS who being wracked with pain and trying every medicine known to man, got sicker from the pills or found them ineffective? Should he remain an invalid for the rest of his life or shall he be afforded the human decency to find relief from eating some marijuana product. (Don’t know what they eat but apparently it provides relief and enables them to function)

What of the person dying from AIDS or an autoimmune disease? Are they less human than you and you feel empowered knowing that? When is their expiration date and who decides the Best if Lived by Date? You, the government, God?

And for the record I spent 4 years as a Sheriff Explorer and cut down $million$ of this stuff and lit a match to it.

I too thought it evil until I found out the true story.

Now the only evil I see are the criminal elements and the lack of quality control on the drug.

I too can walk down the street anywhere in California and get it. Heck I have even seen some happy guys just give it away “To share, not to bogart.”)

Tax it, regulate it and be done with it. BTW, it is a matter of fact this November it will become legal anyway.

The Feds have even recognized it is a boring subject. They aren’t going to bust down the doors of anyone in any state if they are in compliance with the Medical Marijuana laws of their state.

If the Feds have thrown in the towel, what is your problem? Still can’t get that government programming out of your head?

Again, Booze and cigarettes = Okay. Marijuana = Bad?

Oh, and, I am not even a Libertarian, Don’t smoke the stuff or touch it.

(disclaimer, not directed at fredumb2003)

John Stossel claims the Libertarian Label.

If he were the face, Not the Stoners, I am ok.

I am righteously conservative. I have a libertarian bent.

All that to say, I am EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE when it comes to Government. I am radically (I MEAN RADICALLY LIBERAL) in my personal lifestyle.

By some standards I am a libertarian.
