Army discharging single mom who refused deployment

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- A single-mom soldier who says she refused to deploy to Afghanistan because she had no family able to care for her young son will be discharged from the military instead of facing a court-martial, the Army said Thursday.

Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, an Army cook stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, was arrested in November after skipping her unit's deployment flight. Hutchinson, 21, said she couldn't leave her son because her mother had backed out of plans to keep the child a few days before the soldier's scheduled departure.

The Army filed criminal charges last month against Hutchinson of Oakland, Calif., but a general at neighboring Fort Stewart chose to settle the case by granting her an administrative discharge rather than try her in a military court.....

“You are not sexist, you are speaking a truth. Women have no place in the military. The role of a woman in society is to uphold the culture, not engage in warfare. As a woman, I am absolutely opposed to women in the military. When my daughter was in high school, a recruiter called and I let him know my opinion (it is my daughter’s also). He tried to debate the issue, and I demanded he cease calling. The only option should be something on the line of the WWII WACS or WAVES, a support staff for the regular military for females looking for that kind of atmosphere. Women donning fatigues and shooting people is absurd. There is nothing more depressing than a mother engaging in deployment and leaving her children behind. Modern attitudes cite that it is just as sad when a father must leave, but tradition and history recognizes the duty of men to serve their country. I am also the kind of woman who feels that women should cultivate their homes and only work outside of them before marriage or if emergencies arise. The decline of our culture can be directly aligned to the times in history when women and men have abandoned their Biblical roles.”

God bless you! Thank you. I particularly appreciate the statement:

“The role of a woman in society is to uphold the culture, not engage in warfare.”

I do train my own daughters in firearms, for their personal protection, and if an enemy is marching in our streets, there may be a situation where even our women should no how to use a weapon.

But I agree with you, sueuprising, that women should be raising the next generation of patriotic young people, and not be sent off to battlefields.

Now, I don’t have any confidence that the woman in this report has any intention of raising patriotic young people, but that is her error, albeit it is our nation’s problem as well.

I am speaking of common sense principle for the future of our country.

We are sending young people abroad to (potentially) shed their blood and die for our country, while we are socially and morally destroying the country they are dying for. WHO IS THINKING HERE ??!!

OR (!!!!) Are we sending them abroad for the UNO and the one-worlders’ agenda, and not actually in defense of our own country ??? That question must be asked repeatedly.

Sending women into combat or combat zones where they are in harms way, especially when they have children at home contributes to the destruction of our social fabric just as much as a dozen other evils (like sodomites in the military, for one example).

Not a good precedent to set. She won’t be the last AWOL parent.

If she’s been living on the government’s dime, under the guise of being a soldier, with no intention of ever deploying — she’s a welfare queen. She knew the deal when she signed up.

Many years ago, Chesty Puller was well into his 30s and had never married. Someone asked him once why he never married and his reply was that if the Marine Corps had wanted him to have a wife, they would have issued him one. He did eventually get married while in the Corps.

However, if your family life is going to cause you a hardship to serve in the military then you need to get out, period. Back in the old Corps, if you were below the rank of Corporal, you had to ask permission from your CO to get married.

The recently demoted Pvt. Hutchison should’ve put together a family care plan. All the services require them; she has no excuse.

I forgot to put in my last post, that to me being married in the military carries the same issues/responsibilities as being a single parent.

The military is not some social work jobs program. Women joing the military who get pregnant create a huge burden. Anyone in the military should be able to go on the battlefield and fight. This lady needs to leave the military and problem solved.

My son joined the Marines during “Peace Time” (sounds wierd). He was in Japan on 9/11. I knew right away that sooner or later he would be going over there. When he came home from Japan, he got engaged and married shortly after.
He joined with the intentions of being a lifer.
I have a step neice that also was a Marine. Same as this OP, she got pregnant and thought she could get out. Didn’t want to go over. Also, didn’t work the same way as this OP. She was re-assigned and now it seems to be very happy. I was really disapointed in her when I found out the whole story. I really don’t think women should be in the field of war. Is it fair? He!! no. But PC dictates it is. BTW, the reason my niece stayed was the threat of losing it all and having to pay it back. Just trying to give 2 different persectives. My son now has 4 children and my niece is a single mother, father was thrown out of Marines and she finally threw him out too.
If you sign those papers, you damn well better be ready to go and defend your country. This is not a game. Otherwise throw them in jail. Sorry for ramble but this gets me PO’d. All part of the degradation of America.

So, she failed to maintain her readiness and will be given an out instead of a court martial??

“The decline of our culture can be directly aligned to the times in history when women and men have abandoned their Biblical roles.”

The older I get, the more I agree. Seems our country was in much better shape (as were children) when mothers took care of their own children and homes.

What would have happened if she had become pregnant instead? I’m just curious how this is handled. So many people these days want to believe that men and women are the same with just a few minor plumbing differences.

All right, so it appears she did a lot of things wrong, and a lot of stupid things. And maybe her conduct looks truly shameful and selfish. But my wife would have done the same thing, and she’s a 100 per cent Red, White and Blue American who abandoned the Democrat party after we got married because she saw what they are. Part of what Red, White and Blue American mothers are all about is they take care of their children, come hell, high water or deployment orders. And had she gone to her superiors, can anyone really tell us that their reaction wouldn’t have been, “Okay, we understand but get on the bus and we’ll work it out after you get in country”? To me, what she did, taking care of her son, is neither shameful nor disgraceful.

It’s the Army’s lamea** PC approach to not having anyone be dishonorably discharged. My son is a Sgt and had to “chapter” two guys out of the Army last week. They get a “less than honorable” discharge that reverts to honorable in 6 months. They get no benefits, etc, but also no bad mark on their record. Bets are that they will lie down the road and say they served honorably since there is no record of their offense. We’re f*cked with the PC crap in this country.

Without an Honorable Discharge she is not eligible for the Post 9/11 Gi Bill or the Montgomery GI Bill. So no money for school. The VA decides on a case by case basis for discharges, not Dishonorable, if they are qualified for home loans through the VA.

The important part here is that the discharge she received has a Re-enlistment Eligibility Code. These codes 1, 2, 3, or 4 will determine under what conditions if the individual can ever rejoin the military. A (1) will allow the individual to enlist in any branch of the military. The other codes are more restrictive where a 4 will only allow the individual to enlist in the Air Force or Navy providing they can get a waiver to the reason they were discharged for.

What does this mean? If she got a Re-enlisment Eligibility Code of (1) she could go down and join the Navy and be back again to make life difficult for her superiors and peers. Somehow I don't think she got a (1) code.
