Would a forum to invite newbies to ask questions help increase participation?
That s'plains it. :)
Yea, this site is actually pretty easy to to use, but it's not a wordpress or any other web based forum template you and others are most likely familiar with. It's a custom job from Jim and John Robinson. Jim Thompson to all those in Rio Linda.
Personally I find the other forum types to be awkward. And since it is a custom forum, changes don't come easily. For instance; I'd like to see a mobile style sheet so it's easier to read on the iPhone.
(Teaper) I like the tagline.
Free Republic is the only forum that I am aware of that has a ping feature where you can quickly and easily alert any FReeper you want to your comment or a thread.

Um, you do realize this is a test, don't you?
pfft.... reformed smokers are probably worse.
I don't own the place; just here to paint.
To your question, I'd say, "yes, generally." I learn a lot from the smart stuff that these people post here; then those same people turn around and post something so utterly stupid that you wouldn't believe.
Works sorta like a real big family.
I don’t consider myself a n00b any more. I prefer tech-toddler. ;-)
Thanks for your note.
I am not worried about the attempted abuse, I understand FR has its ways. I’m not sensitive & I do not hold grudges.
I will try to be respectful. To be honest, though, I find any seniority system to conflict with the merit system that I prefer. Still, respect is a good thing.
As for my criticism of the interface, this place rocks! The thing is, I bet a lot of new people, many of them older, are stopping by. The events since the election are bringing us a new paradigm & it might be a great time to see how we could take advantage of new possibilities.
My technique... I had to make my first post sometime. Perhaps the heat sent my way suggests I may have had a point. I thought I started out respectfully, and then I replied in kind. It’s all good.
Thanks!
Your keyboard is writing checks your laptop can’t cash, sonny.
Do you really want to make enemies this quickly?
Because you are certainly doing it.
>>Your arrogant style reminds me of another poster long gone that used phrases like get over yourselves.<<
The unlamented havoc?
Everybody- I love the site. The interface is powerful.
There will be a lot of new people coming by who are fairly new to the internet & to PCs. God bless them. Some are Reagan democrats... and some will not have embraced either party... I’d like to keep them around.
Let’s bake a cake & put out a welcome mat.
Yeah, I’m a crazy radical, driven to madness & general insanity. Tell me again to respect my elders because, ironically, I was hoping to help that specific age bracket.
Yes it is.
Learning HTML formatting by trial of fire worked for me.
It taught you how to do typos really well......
Yeah, and the militant vegetarians.
Don't ever respect someone just because they signed up before you did. If someone is demanding respect because they stumbled on this place before someone else, they're in the wrong IMO. I was trying to say that you should 'respect' the fact that they're comfortable with the place (i.e. touting change in an initial post). It's just human nature.
“Do you really want to make enemies this quickly?”
I just took a vow of civility.
In addition to some jazz... I’ve tried to suggest we be more inviting to newcomers. If you think this is a good idea, then please support making whatever changes sound good to you.
Whatever disrespect you’ve identified fom my posts, please accept my assurances that the “trigger” I felt was hostility sent directly to me. This hostility, in my opinion, is not a good thing for “us” — and, I am sorry, but, I will post, more politley, in the manner that I choose. I am free to do that.
Yes, I feel a common mission here. I am not trying to offend anyone.
Thank you
I diagree. This n00b could be a great FReeper. I’m willing to give him a chance. ;-D
