Is it just me, or have FR's servers had a real tough week?
What a coincidence, I’ve been to a Kinko’s!
“Adjust to what? Losing a server this week and finding there’s a problem? I’ve read posts by Jim Robinson and John and there is a problem they’re having difficulty tracing after a server went down.”
Looks like you’ve been here since 2000 (as have I, and I was lurking long before that). Having a server problem “this week” is hardly the issue. Jim Rob and Co. do a fantastic job under the circumstances. It’s just unfortunate that it appears that (based on experience to date) the more successful the site becomes the more unreliable it will be.
*gasp* You haven’t heard? Kinkos has a new “front” group, some have become FedEx Office, unleashed on an unsuspecting peoples!
That could be a big part of it. DOS kiddies like to screw with us.
By the way, for those who are wondering about FR's hardware, my understanding is that we have about a dozen servers at the data center. About half of them are dedicated to handling Free Republic back-end processing. We also have a couple front-end servers directing the traffic and balancing the load, a couple database servers, an administrative server, a secure server, and a real-time database backup server. We have two main IP's, one as a standby if the first goes down. We also have some older servers that John uses for backup and development.
Theoretically, we have a fail-safe system. The "fail" seems to be working great, now we're working on perfecting the "safe" part.
It appears that our current series of crashes have to do with our traffic load. It appears that our servers begin overloading and first one crashes (by becoming completely jammed and failing to respond) then the next, and the next, etc, until the entire system and all backups fail to respond. That's when we have to start rebooting. And we've had some problems recently with our rebooting process.
We do not know yet why we are overloading. We have been able to handle several times our normal load with no problem. We do not rule out DOS attack, but cannot find anything in the logs to identify it. John will continue trying to isolate the problem, but we do not feel at this time that it is for a lack of server power.
All I can say is, please bear with us. We've experienced these kinds of systems problems before whether hardware, software, balancing or Bolshevik, and have always been able to work through or around them eventually.
God willing, we will persevere!
Man isn't that the truth! It seems we can't keep up with traffic. I guess there's a price to pay for being the pulse of the Conservatives.
When FR goes down, I go into withdrawal-no other fix helps.LOL.
Thanks for the info.
If source of interference not identified quickly, then there probably needs to be raw packet inspection at the router/switch level. Cisco or other network engineers could make short work of that.
Drudge works for about 10 minutes and then I have consumed it all and have no one to complain too LoL.
My favorite thing about FR is the commentary and feedback regarding the news.
Life used to suck before FR. I would be yelling at the TV and scaring the women and children LoL
With FR, there is always someone who immediately calls BS on the same lie that I just saw in the news, And better yet...There is always someone who can ADD more insight to the situation.
The Dan Rather smear campaign against GWB comes to mind.
Immediately someone says “Hey! That font didn’t exist in 1972” And I think “hey! Thats right! Back then we used specific typewriter fonts in the military. We used Courier pitch 10 or OCR”
Then someone says that’s a polytononic font.. and I think whats that?
We have SO many wonderful people here in so many fields.
Its those people that really make FR what it is.
Yeh, I stumbled across FR during the Clinton years-only way I was able to keep sanity in the home.LOL
I lurked for quite a while. I was online the night that FR discovered RatherGate forgery-That is one of the best times in my memory.LOL
When I hear something in the news, I always turn to FR to find out more. It is a great site.
Thank you, Jim.
Anyone posting here under a screen name has to know that every post is read into a database for the 0bots to search and scan for any opportunity to attack and attack again.
You can just picture these people, who are probably stuck in some adolescent anti-parent mode, peculiarly slavish to the freedom-quashing efforts and dissent-smashing tripe that attaches itself to all who work under the terms of the present administration.
After all, Nazi was ‘merely’ a political party at first.
Besides, we don’t get the face-to-face smackdown opportunities with nose-in-the-air types like Huffington and Krugman, who no doubt simply have their security goons pick off their opposition.
Anyone reading this who does not understand that we’ll all be called to stand for freedom now or get on our knees for crumbs has no clue about the fight.
I’m rather fond of the perverted screen name profiles on other sites that have this moniker. Someone out there gets a hard on for me every once in awhile.
Me, I just wish FR could be paid for the pearls that pop up on here, since I know for a fact they’re used.
I am Joe Wilson, plumber at large.
I don’t know — did you have a tough week too?
I think you covered it all in just that one post.
I'm pretty impressed.
You are ungrateful wretches and cads. You make use of the guys’ forum to spout your own half-baked ideas, and then insult them when there is a problem, which I am sure they are working as fast as they can to resolve. How about a little support and appreciation instead of witless cheap shots?
“Ungrateful wretches and cads”? I support this forum financially to the best of my ability and I want it to work. Up yours.
What are you talking about?
Jim,
I had no idea how hard John has to work to keep FR up and running!
Maybe we should all chip in and buy him a Superman cape!
Thank You for FR!
Randy
Now that was a funny post!
LOL
Post on.
