I have a hardware question. I just now installed a new motherboard. When I powered it up, the fans came on and so did the mouse, but I did not hear beep and my screen was blank. What did I do wrong?
this motherboard, it is from intel - a DG43GT iG43
Into this motherboard I put an Intel Pentium D 945 3.4GHz 800MHz 2x2MB CPU. I then added 8 GB (four 2GB sticks) of OCZ brand ram, and put in a OCZ brand silent power supply (500 watt) and a GeForce 9800GT graphics card. All of that stuff was new. I can only guess if I seated all that stuff correctly.
On more little detail. When I first turn it on, the fans turn on - but then after 2 or 3 seconds, the whole thing turns off, then it comes on again after about 5 seconds. Is that a short circuit?
Also, I have never had a graphics card installed in my system before - so I now have three different ports to plug-in my moniter. So I just guessed which one to use and picked one the back of the GeForce card.
I did not put a modem in it, as I do not plan on using it on the web. Would that mess anything up? Do I need a modem?
Any advice is useful. I hope I do not have to take into the computer shop. They charge $70 just to look at it.
I am going to by a PCI test card to tell me what is happening in the BIOS. I'll become an expert on this - I spent too much money on this already!
The first time I turned it on, I did not have the GPU connected to the power supply. After I connected it, the same thing happened. It powers up, fans on, no beep, 2 seconds later it turns off then tuns back on 5 seconds later, with fans but without beep.
Could I have damaged my motherboard powering it up without the GPU connected to the power supply? Drats.
I’ll try ya’all suggestions! I am just getting off work from a 14 hour day. I don’t have a working PC at home. I’ll check back with you soon (like Sunday or maybe next week.)
Thanks to all.
strip it down to bare bones. Use the onboard video.
If it doesn’t work then, it’s probably the motherboard or CPU.
Also, check to make sure you don’t have a trace or something on the motherboard touching ground.
Cheers
Yeah, that board has an onboard graphics card. You should yank out the one you put in and plug your monitor into the onboard video to get your machine up and running. You can put it back in later if you want. Also check that 4-ping plug into the motherboard in the pic above.
If you turn your machine on but don’t see anything on the screen, watch your keyboard as the computer boots up. If you see the lights on your keyboard blink after you turn it on, there is a good chance it is booting but you just aren’t seeing it on the screen.
Look just to the SW of the KB/PS2/USB(8/13) on the board.
Remove the video card. Load the drivers for it before installing it while using the on-board video. Check that the memory sticks are well seated. It sounds like the Power Supply loopback is ok. Make sure all screws are tight as the serve a return paths. The default settings of the bios should’t be an issue right now.
I need you to lay hands on my computer.
How much do you charge for over the net help?
Also, if you get a successful boot-up insert any CD’s that came with the board first. Load the files in the order they are listed and re-boot after each one.
Should I load the motherboard CD before I load on windows?
No, windows will do the management of the CD. I didn’t realize you have a clean hard drive.
What version of Windows are you loading?
You can do that? No wonder my systems never booted. LOL
I agree with the beep diagnostics. That's the lowest level of troubleshooting. But that won't work unless he's hooked up the speaker to the motherboard.
The speaker is built onto that board.
It’s an old Dimension 2600....I don’t even know why I bothered setting the thing back up...I think I felt sorry for it or something.
The DIMM contact being screwed up might have been the problem. That’s a good call. No matter...I’m using the old DDR in another system anyway.
I am loading Windows XP 64 bit Professional.
Do you have your video yet?
I am not at home yet. I am posting this from the gym right now. Just collecting the needed data. I’ll be messing with it soon. I do not have a working PC at home right now.
Doing some kettlebell swings. :-)
