I've been shocked that no one is strongly challenging the idea that the new iPad is going to kill the Amazon Kindle. Reading books on a back lit LCD screen doesn't work. Try it on your laptop. I guarantee you will want to scratch your eyes out of your head in about 20 minutes.
The beauty of the Kindle and other e-readers is the e-ink technology that really feels like reading a printed page.

I thought I wanted a Kindle, but now I’ll be getting an iPad. To be able to web surf and have a book reader all in one? Beach vacations will never be the same!
You will not be able to read on the beach with an iPad. Backlighting doesn’t work well outside. Better get the Kindle if you want to read outside.

It started out innocently, with a few favorite books to read on my PDA phone, then I coverted my entire collection of pulps collected before the .com boom from.pdf to .lits. Then my wife wanted one, only with a screen she could read at the table outside...
I dont see the collection ending anytime soon.
My daughter and I were talking about the iPad and what I’d like to see is a device that is JUST a personal media center that looks something like the iPad. A device with ibooks, music and movies with internet access/whispernet and the ability to copy/play your own music/DVDs. No windows, no email, just media.
It may be, but not yet. I posted about this on another thread. It is a “crippled” device, typical for Apple with a vs. 1.0 release. Eventually, they’ll release the product it SHOULD have been and for less $$$.....and it’ll sell like hotcakes.
Anyone who buys this version....is a complete fool.
Yeah, but can you hold it on your lap or in your hand for hours?
I can see some special cases like yours. I was surprised that for many books the e version was almost as much as the paper version. Finally I use Audible for all my audio books, on my Ipod.
I actually can do that on my 1st generation Kindle. It comes with a basic web brouser on it
Good luck reading that thing on the beach...
It’s interesting how upset the iPad has made Apple’s competitors. Google hates Apple with a passion, and is running a PR campaign against the iPhone, and now the iPad.
Google is pro Obama, and pro Socialism... I’m not sure I trust them any more.
How can I get Sarah Palin to sign my Kindle?
agreed,,the puter hurts to read for long. I love the kibndle e ink.
THe appeal is that you can take as many books as you will read with you. I routinely read three books at a time. And you don’t have your house cluttered with books,,we ran out of space with books and just don’t want to buy more.
Downside is you cannot lend them. But you can get them free at certain web places. I got the new Steig Larson book, unpublished yet here in US, free from a site, a good one. All the classics are free.
It is amazing. And newpapers,,,nothing to recycle and you can carry everything with you. No more lugging around paper books.
If I were the Librarian, I'd offer to come by your house and pick them up....
PS my library has ebooks for lend,,they delete in lthree weeks. I don’t like them much.
And the kindle or sony, I have both, fits ina purse. The ipad is big. Plus you can lie on your side in bed and read the kindle with one hand proppped on a pillow. I don’t think you can do that with the ipad.j
The name is hideous,,Jobs must be a doofus for that. Should have been the i slate.
No you just get a crayon and draw on the screen like old times. Sheesh!
Hey, thanks!
I’m in the shade on the beach. If I can read the iPhone on the beach, the iPad should be no different.
