I've been shocked that no one is strongly challenging the idea that the new iPad is going to kill the Amazon Kindle. Reading books on a back lit LCD screen doesn't work. Try it on your laptop. I guarantee you will want to scratch your eyes out of your head in about 20 minutes.
The beauty of the Kindle and other e-readers is the e-ink technology that really feels like reading a printed page.

I can read ebooks on my laptop for hours at a time, backlit. It works, wouldn’t do it any other way.
Also check out the battery life and the storage space.
Kindles and IPads will both have their markets I think
Good to see someone finally pointing this out. The reason the Kindle is great is because it works with no backlight. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been such a success.
One offering will dominate all the others as much as we see one model of car stereo dominating all the others.
One size does not fit all.
You do however need to put on your flame suit, because the iPple people will be here shortly to flame you for not worshipping at the shrine of Jobs
I don’t get the digital book thing. I understand the Ipod, you want access to lots of music, your mood changes, you listen while engaged in other activities etc. When I read a book, I’m reading it from start to finish, I can’t be jogging or driving, I’m reading. Except for the situation of needing access to multiple reference material or as a student to textbooks, I just don’t get the appeal.
if you saw the stacks of books I have to get rid of quarterly, you would consider one, too. I have about thirty books presently stacked in the corner of my living room ready to go to the library. it’s a hassle. much better to sit at home, select a book, download it and keep it forever.
Glad it works for you, but you are in the distinct minority. I’ve tried reading on a computer screen, and I can’t do it. Anyone I know who has tried has not done it for long.
The iPad will not kill the Kindle. I see the iPad as an alternative to a netbook for people who do not need to do much typing. Even in that market, the top netbooks now boast a 14-hour battery life versus 10 for the iPad.

ONLY thirty?
You can usually tell how successful an Apple product will be by the number of negative articles written about the product. In essence, the more negative articles the greater the success.
I attribute this to the amount of fear Apple elicits in those who lack real creativity.
The iPad appears to be poised to be one of Apples more successful offerings.
I agree that reading for any length of time on a computer screen is very tiring to the eyes.
Personally, I can’t stop giggling about the name (thanks Mad TV)!
Steve Jobs should have tried out the name with some menstruating females before he launched this product.
Does it come in two sizes? iMaxiPad and iMiniPad?
I do this every other month or so. It is exhausting to haul them all into my library to donate. lots of steps involved in that historic building. I am putting it off.
>I am putting it off.
Now I seem to be an expert in procrastination! ;)
First of all, I don’t question that the iPad will be a success. I just don’t think it’s a real threat to the Kindle.
Secondly, I think your logic is wrong. Did the iPhone get ANY negative press? I certainly don’t remember any.
Given the hours at a time I spend on the computer, reading mountains of material, I greatly disagree.
My wife has a Kindle which I bought for her. The reason for not using a back-lit screen is major battery savings. Far less energy is used. The battery required is both far smaller and lighter but also lasting many times longer between charges.
The true beauty is electronic readers are Godsends for the vision impaired, especially those with macular degeneration. One size does not fit all in that market. Now there are more choices at more affordable pricing.
I have an iTouch. but not in the market for an iPhone or iPad. The iTouch has a place in my life. I keep a ton of movies on them and there is nothing like watching one under the covers on a cold winter night when I cannot sleep.
The downside is no flash support. (Supposed to be changing, but I doubt it)
I travel a lot and used to carry lots of books with me. Now I just take the Kindle with as many books as I want to download. I carry it in my purse. I will be taking a trip out of the country and will be gone almost a month. My Kindle will contain all the reading material I will need. By the way, I downloaded about 10 books the other day. One cost less than $2 and one was $0.25. The others were free. By the way, the Kindle will read the book to you while you are driving.
Yes it did. Plenty of it. As did the iPod.
