Six sorority members at Rutgers arrested for hazing
Star-Ledger ^ | 01/27/10 | Sue Epstein and Tom Haydon

The young pledge said she was told the beatings would "humble" her, that each flesh-rending strike with a wooden paddle would build love and trust between sorority sisters.

It wasn’t hazing, she said they told her. The women of Sigma Gamma Rho at Rutgers University didn’t condone hazing.

For seven nights the beatings went on, she said. In all, she was struck 201 times. On the eighth day — unable to sit, her buttocks covered with blood clots and welts — she went to the hospital. Then she reported it to the university.

Today, Rutgers police said they had arrested six members of the sorority on charges of aggravated hazing, alleging they repeatedly beat at least three pledges between Jan. 18 and Jan. 25. A university official, vice president of student affairs Greg Blimling, and the pledge who spoke to The Star-Ledger put the number of victims at seven.

The university immediately suspended the Rutgers chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, as did the sorority’s national organization, headquartered in North Carolina.

"The local chapter was doing this on its own, not with the sanction of either the university or the national organization," Blimling said, noting Rutgers has a clear anti-hazing policy that includes workshops for all fraternities and sororities.

He said the university moved aggressively against Sigma Gamma Rho, which has operated for "many years" on the New Brunswick campus but does not have a dedicated sorority house, after learning another hazing session had been scheduled for Tuesday night. The first arrests took place before it could happen.

I forgot about BGLOs. The hazing culture seems utterly foreign to me. Is it some kind of group devolution thing like the Stanford Prison Experiment? Group sadomasochistic activity providing sexual release? Just a cycle of violence? It' mystifying, it seems like such a huge waste of time.

I wonder if there is a correlation between that and outlawing self defense?

All I can say is my daughter is not joining any of those sororities. And if she is ever hit I know she will defend herself. Laws be damned. Odd I didn’t find anything so on my search on girls....I will have to search for that now.

September 18, 2009 MILLBURN NJ

Hazing incidents which reportedly targeted freshmen girls at the High School were condemned today by Superintendent of Schools Richard Brodow.

Every year these senior girls -- there is usually that one clique, I don't know what you'd call it, a group of girls who create a so-called slut list of incoming freshman girls," said recent Milburn graduate Conner Leslie. "It basically consists of a list of girls and little blurbs of something degrading. For about 10 to 15 years now, popular senior girls have developed the list and passed it around, according to Leslie and other former classmates. This year it was created at an alcohol-fueled party and it was worse than ever, one current senior told "Good Morning America"

Sassy is never going to high school. Online home school will work out just fine.

allow me to have the honor of observing that all that is wrong with modern society can probably be traced to fraternity boys. And since they can't function without sorority girls, I guess they're culpable, too.

If ever there were a class of humanity not worth its weight in sand...

According to the sorority’s website, the motto of sigma gamma rho sorority, which seems to be an African American one, is “reaching inward, upward, and outward.” Is that how they describe their way of beating the newest batch of young women?

There are some black fraternities that still brand their members.

If we had tried that in my house even way back in the 1960's it would have been all over.

There is a different standard applied to the so-called black fraternal organizations.

Kind of a sweeping generalization, don't you think?

The fraternity system hasbeen badly degraded over time with theconnivanceofthe colleges and universities.

In my era (1960's) fraternities taught brother hood, maturity, and trained members for life by giving them responsibilities usually shouldered by adults.

My house had its own kitchen food service, maintenance, managed all of our own funds etc. etc. We were not unusual in this regard.

This binge drinking/branding/sadism stuff is a product of poor upbringing noty the fraternity system.

Watching NFL on TV, I often notice strange marks on the arms of many of the players, mostly blacks. They don’t look like tattoos. They look like raised welts.

I can’t help wondering if these are fraternity symbols branded in.

Anyone else notice these?

Good eye. I’ve noticed a lot of scarring on the brother’s arms, but I never thought much about it. Now, scars do stand out more on dark skin, but there might be something cultural going on.
People scar the crap out of themselves all over the world.
