Six sorority members at Rutgers arrested for hazing
Star-Ledger ^ | 01/27/10 | Sue Epstein and Tom Haydon

The young pledge said she was told the beatings would "humble" her, that each flesh-rending strike with a wooden paddle would build love and trust between sorority sisters.

It wasn’t hazing, she said they told her. The women of Sigma Gamma Rho at Rutgers University didn’t condone hazing.

For seven nights the beatings went on, she said. In all, she was struck 201 times. On the eighth day — unable to sit, her buttocks covered with blood clots and welts — she went to the hospital. Then she reported it to the university.

Today, Rutgers police said they had arrested six members of the sorority on charges of aggravated hazing, alleging they repeatedly beat at least three pledges between Jan. 18 and Jan. 25. A university official, vice president of student affairs Greg Blimling, and the pledge who spoke to The Star-Ledger put the number of victims at seven.

The university immediately suspended the Rutgers chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, as did the sorority’s national organization, headquartered in North Carolina.

"The local chapter was doing this on its own, not with the sanction of either the university or the national organization," Blimling said, noting Rutgers has a clear anti-hazing policy that includes workshops for all fraternities and sororities.

He said the university moved aggressively against Sigma Gamma Rho, which has operated for "many years" on the New Brunswick campus but does not have a dedicated sorority house, after learning another hazing session had been scheduled for Tuesday night. The first arrests took place before it could happen.

This is exactly why I didn’t join a sorority in College. The first girl that raised a paddle to me would get it splintered upside her head.

I don't understand the kind of mindset that would flout Panhel/IFC regulations, university regulations, and their organization's national regulations in order to inflict a little bit of cruelty. And I don't understand the kind of people who would undergo such sadism just to join the group that inflicted it upon them (genuine masochists excepted, of course). Why would you want to join a group that ritually spanks you in contravention of endlessly reiterated rules? And why would anyone in such a group want as a member someone so morally timid that they would subject themselves to such degrading treatment?

OTOH, there is a certain amount of prurient charm in the idea of sorority sisters ritually spanking each other, so maybe I should cut them some slack.

Wise choice :-) The mentality and emotional stability of those who crave such attention is rather questionable:

In all, she was struck 201 times. On the eighth day — unable to sit, her buttocks covered with blood clots and welts

Group think, peer pressure, and the “need to fit in” is the only explanation I can think of.

I dated a Sigma Gamma Rho back in college, and she didn’t go through any of this garbage. That said, there are some fraternities and sororities who have historically been known for particular types of hazing. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, a number of Kappa Alpha Psi chapters - including the one at my university - were shut down for beating pledges who failed to properly answer questions in “lineup.” Whether SGR has an organization-wide history of this sort of violence or not, I don’t know. Like I said, my gal didn’t have to deal with that crap.

Sad to say but my experience was that black fraternities and sororities were not covered under Panhel/IFC-at least not at my college.

We would get nailed for having a rush event at a restaurant that happened to have beer on the menu while black pledges walking around school with fresh branded arms (done with coat hangars heated on a stove) would be ignored by the admin.

Nope & I pity the poor fool who lifts a hand to me. The last one that did got broken ribs. I don't think I am into that stuff lol. Now if a man wanted me to paddle him I am sure I could do it without a problem. WEFG

NJ seems to have a problem with hazing. At Rider University Gary DeVercelly Jr., an 18-year-old freshman from Long Beach, Calif. died in March 2007 after drinking most of a bottle of vodka during an initiation into the Phi Kappa Tau.

Thank your lucky stars you never met me & tried it. I may be on the small side but I am one tough NJ lady with a bad attitude towards men who think they know what I want or would even try to spank me. If one managed to get a few hits in ...I would be sure to get him while he was sleeping. Duct tape & some super glue would be rolling around in my mind. Or maybe taking some pics of him with my make up on to show my friends. I would get even.

NJ seems to have a real problem with this hazing & in high school no less too. It goes back a long time.

1981

Toms River H.S. (N.J.) Soccer Freshmen were abused physically and thrown in the mud. The head coach and two assistant coaches were dismissed because they allowed the annual event.

1988

Lyndhurst H.S. (N.J.) Football At a football camp in Pennsylvania, one sophomore was allegedly forced to insert his finger into the anus of another sophomore while 20 to 30 other teammates looked on. Two upperclassmen were dismissed from the team, and two others were demoted on the squad as a result of a school inquiry into the matter. No coaches were disciplined.

Holmdel H.S. (N.J.) Football About 20 underclassmen reportedly played a nude game of Twister as about a dozen senior teammates urged them on. As a result of the incident, all of the school's 85 football players reportedly were ordered to undergo mental health counseling, and some coaches reportedly were disciplined.

1992

Lodi H.S. (N.J.) 1988 Football Anthony Erekat, a member of the football squad, was duct-taped by the arms and legs at a football camp run by the team's coaches. He had his hair hacked off and had players spread feces and peanut butter over his body. Fourteen players eventually pleaded guilty and were ordered to perform 50 hours each of community service. They also were suspended for the season's first game but then were allowed to play when someone realized that the opening game was against a tough rival. The players served their suspension during a game against a lesser opponent. Erekat received a financial settlement.

1995

Hasbrouck Heights H.S. (N.J.) Football Two seniors on the football team were not charged by police or punished by the school after asking two younger players to take a lap around the playing field without pants. Family members asked the police and school to let the participants settle the problem themselves.

1999

Middletown H.S. (N.J.) Football Lawyers for a 14-year-old who claims he was brutally hazed at New York state football camp filed suit, naming the Middletown Board of Education and his football coaches among the defendants. After the hazing charges were first made, prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone under New York law. Some of the boys were allegedly stripped and struck in the groin. Others were hog-tied and used as "human bowling balls," rolled down a floor covered with gallons of liquid soap.

2000

Absegami H.S. (N.J.) Wrestling Labe Black, a state champion wrestler, was arrested for allegedly making a young wrestler drink five beers in 20 minutes. Officials launched an investigation and suspended him from school.
