The young pledge said she was told the beatings would "humble" her, that each flesh-rending strike with a wooden paddle would build love and trust between sorority sisters.
It wasnt hazing, she said they told her. The women of Sigma Gamma Rho at Rutgers University didnt condone hazing.
For seven nights the beatings went on, she said. In all, she was struck 201 times. On the eighth day unable to sit, her buttocks covered with blood clots and welts she went to the hospital. Then she reported it to the university.
Today, Rutgers police said they had arrested six members of the sorority on charges of aggravated hazing, alleging they repeatedly beat at least three pledges between Jan. 18 and Jan. 25. A university official, vice president of student affairs Greg Blimling, and the pledge who spoke to The Star-Ledger put the number of victims at seven.
The university immediately suspended the Rutgers chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, as did the sororitys national organization, headquartered in North Carolina.
"The local chapter was doing this on its own, not with the sanction of either the university or the national organization," Blimling said, noting Rutgers has a clear anti-hazing policy that includes workshops for all fraternities and sororities.
He said the university moved aggressively against Sigma Gamma Rho, which has operated for "many years" on the New Brunswick campus but does not have a dedicated sorority house, after learning another hazing session had been scheduled for Tuesday night. The first arrests took place before it could happen.

This is exactly why I didn’t join a sorority in College. The first girl that raised a paddle to me would get it splintered upside her head.
Most women like being spanked hard.
Me too. Plus I’m a guy.
OTOH, there is a certain amount of prurient charm in the idea of sorority sisters ritually spanking each other, so maybe I should cut them some slack.

Really? Hmmm I guess most men that believe this & try it don’t mind when the woman breaks his ribs huh?

Group think, peer pressure, and the “need to fit in” is the only explanation I can think of.
I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

I guess you’ve just never been properly spanked, m’dear. ;^)
I dated a Sigma Gamma Rho back in college, and she didn’t go through any of this garbage. That said, there are some fraternities and sororities who have historically been known for particular types of hazing. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, a number of Kappa Alpha Psi chapters - including the one at my university - were shut down for beating pledges who failed to properly answer questions in “lineup.” Whether SGR has an organization-wide history of this sort of violence or not, I don’t know. Like I said, my gal didn’t have to deal with that crap.
Sad to say but my experience was that black fraternities and sororities were not covered under Panhel/IFC-at least not at my college.
We would get nailed for having a rush event at a restaurant that happened to have beer on the menu while black pledges walking around school with fresh branded arms (done with coat hangars heated on a stove) would be ignored by the admin.
NJ seems to have a problem with hazing. At Rider University Gary DeVercelly Jr., an 18-year-old freshman from Long Beach, Calif. died in March 2007 after drinking most of a bottle of vodka during an initiation into the Phi Kappa Tau.
Thank your lucky stars you never met me & tried it. I may be on the small side but I am one tough NJ lady with a bad attitude towards men who think they know what I want or would even try to spank me. If one managed to get a few hits in ...I would be sure to get him while he was sleeping. Duct tape & some super glue would be rolling around in my mind. Or maybe taking some pics of him with my make up on to show my friends. I would get even.
