How to make a torch for less than a dollar

With only a few "household items" you can make a torch that's relatively safe* that can last for up to an hour.

step 1 supplies For this project you will need an piece of 100% cotton cloth* (I used an old under shirt) a sturdy stick or a scrap piece of wood a stapler a hammer and tiki torch oil or kerosene

*Has to be 100% cotton (or Kevlar ) please don't use any material that melts when burned

step 2 wrapping the torch the first thing you want to do is get a rag that's about twelve inches wide and roughly twenty four inches long and fold it width wise until its about seven inches wide, and staple one end to the stick with three staples like in the picture.

You can use wire or wire mesh to affix the cloth instead of staples ( I used staples cause I had them and it took the least time to use) Do not use zip ties unless they are metal core , even then I wouldn't (who wants melted plastic all over their hands :P)

I hear a shilleighle can be made from black thorn, and when cured is useful as a walking stick, and for shooing dogs away or whatever.

I am concerned about the use of kerosene could have on the environment.

Is there a green alternative?

Since you ask

How to Make a Torch in the Wild

Know you'll need basic materials to make a torch in the wild. Use a fairly thick branch or stick and tie a piece of cloth (from the bottom of your pant leg or a piece of your jacket if necessary) around it at one end; find some sort of slow-burning fuel if possible, such as tree sap, animal fat or even chapstick if you have it with you.

Tips & Warnings

Avoid tearing too much cloth from your clothes; you'll need as much of your clothes as possible to keep you warm, especially at night. Keep from getting hypothermia.

Never touch an animal found already dead to obtain animal fat for fuel; it may have died from rabies or another fatal disease. Stay away from all live animals showing signs of erratic behavior and/or with foam around their mouths; these are not okay to hunt and eat.

The last tagline I tried got banned.

“Obama is a fine orator and Janet Napalitano is a cunning linguist”

Re: The Princess Bride (the movie)

Do yourself a favor and rent it... It has sword fighting AND Andre the Giant!

Seriesly, rent it. It's a genuinely sweet movie and Cary Elwes and Mandy Potenkin are really terrific in it. And Robin Wright is such a babe, you almost forget that she's Sean Penn's ex! Almost.

Well, there's water, but it's a little harder to get lit.
