Way down deep inside, Barack Obama has to know the bloom is off the rose.
Indeed, as he prepares to deliver his first State of the Union address two nights from now, he must be feeling a bit like Willy Loman, the mythical salesman who lamented how tough it is out there “with just a shoeshine and a smile,” trying to peddle a product no one wants to buy.
Just 14 months ago, adored by multitudes who jammed Grant Park in Chicago to cheer his victory speech, Obama was at the zenith of a mountaintop experience, proclaiming, “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”
Now Scott Brown is saying the very same thing in the aftermath of his own historic victory which, to a large degree, was a reflection of the sinking popularity of the rock star in the White House.
Obama soon discovered what John Thompson learned in his turbulent reign as basketball coach at Georgetown: “The wind blows hardest at the top of the mountain.”

Do we look at Janet Napolitano and feel safe? No.
Do we look at Tim Geithner and feel prosperous? No.
Do we look at Eric Holder and feel united? No.
When we look at our borders, our economy, our troops in harm’s way, do we then look at this president and the people who surround him and feel we’re in good hands? No.
It’s finally dawning on him that we can no longer be appeased by the turning of a clever phrase.
He came here a week ago yesterday expecting to sweep us off our feet in behalf of Martha Coakley, only to find that for the third time in recent months - four if you count his failed Olympic plea - his endorsement meant nothing.
Truth be told, when it comes to political coattails, this president’s now wearing a tank top.
Back in 1976, as the Phillies were in the midst of an infamous September swoon, Carl Yastrzemski, looking on from Fenway Park [map], commiserated with them, knowing what it’s like to find yourself in the midst of a total collapse.
“It’s like you’ve just cut down a tree,” Yaz said. “And now you can see it’s falling the wrong way, but you can’t stop it.”
No, and you can’t sweet talk your way through it, either.
Odumbo may be many things but “clever” is not one of them.
Clever phrases like “present?”
Well if clever phrases don’t cut it - I guess he is totally disarmed. Because, except for a superficial ability to communicate that was highly overrated by the press during the campaign, he’s a totally empty suit.
Clever? Obama has never said anything clever. The teleprompter scrolls phrases that are astonishingly vapid (MSM: "soaring"), but that has nothing to do with clever.
Any paragraph of any Mark Steyn column has more clever phrases than Obama has ever spoken.
Mark Steyn is great.
Just like an actor. Perhaps he can go to Haiti after this and take over. He’ll be in the perfect role, a dictator begging for Americans to loan him money. If the Haitians keep him there, I don’t mind the occasional Aid package.
I’ve been trying to get this administration to understand for quite a while that they should tread lightly, that the crowd cheering you on today will be the same crowd screaming for your head tomorrow...for a tiny gruop of allegedly smart people (and one terrorist) they sure seem to be stuck on stupid.
They are stuck on progressive and think we are stupid.
