There were 42 years worth of demons, 42 years of mostly struggles, 42 years of waiting until next year. Not anymore. This, the 43rd year of the New Orleans Saints, will be different.
In one swing of Garrett Hartley's right leg Sunday night, the Saints kicked away their demons, booted out their past struggles and ended the wait.
The Saints are going to Super Bowl XLIV. Hartley's 40-yard winning field goal in overtime of the Saints' thrilling 31-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC championship game guaranteed them a spot.
"I just knew when it came off my foot it was going to split the bars, " said Hartley, the Saints' second-year kicker. "I just turned around and put my hands up in the air and hugged (holder Mark) Brunell. This team is headed to Miami now."

We wore bags on our heads at home when we were youngsters. Good fun. Ole Archie is gonna have some mixed feelings in a couple of weeks.
Dontcha just love it?
How many times I watched his arrogant ass toss a game away. Then claim that he wasnt getting a good deal when he led the Packers on a couple years ago in the I might retire debacle.
Rodgers is ten times the QB that Farve ever was at the same stage of his playing.
I can’t really disagree with anything you said there. We were outplayed, but turnovers are a part of the game. To blame the Vikings loss on the officials is the silly part of peoples argument. The officials didn’t make them commit 5 turnovers. The Saints will have to be near perfect on offense against the Colts to have any chance. But they’ve been nearly perfect before on offense so who knows?
Live by the Favre, die by the Favre. One more 3rd down run by the Vikes instead of that pass interception could have kicked a FG at the end. Too many Vike turnovers-— end of story.
The Vikes had a good running game and defense when Tavaris Jackson was their starter, how far did they get?
This. In spades.
And yes, I still hate Favre even though he gave us a great season.
Yes!!!! I was hoping I wouldn’t have to work too hard.
New Orleans 31
Minnesota 28
The sore losers make me laugh, though!
Saints could make the argument that they made some mistakes that handed opportunities to the Vikings.
Bush gave them a golden opportunity and what did the V’s do, fumbled it in the red zone before the half.
Yeah, Bos Costas considers himself someone who knows football, but even that idiot will tell you the Viking D played like crap, the way the Saints played and the mistakes they made, crappy calls against them that they lost.
Saints didn’t bring their B game, but they didn’t need it against a team that blew it all on their Cowboy win.
Lots of so called Viking fans are turning out to be bigger whining losers than all the Cowboy fans I know. Shameful.
Favre doesn’t come back to the Vikings next year, Viking will suck and all the fans can be sitting in a bar drinking their water down beer crying about “coulda, woulda, shoulda (See Mora Sr for explanation). LOL
Brett and the Vikings got exactly what they deserved.
Your lost to the Cowboys really SUCKED for me. Can’t stand them and you guys gave them the game.
Hurt me I’m sure as much as it did any Bills fan.
Agree with you but I still admire his spirit and selfless play. He was a throwback to the old days. A tough guy that didn’t back down. It’s time for him to call it quits I think. I know he has many fans(and many detractors)
I’m wallowing with you ;-) MortMan, sorry, but you sound like a scorned woman!
Lost=Loss
There are lots of reasons the Vikings lost. You could make the argument that one of the reasons that the Vikings lost was because of the “too many men in the huddle” penalty near the end of regulation play.
If you recall, the Vikings were in a position, on third down, to make a 50-yard FG that would have won the game for them. This is a long kick, but its about a 75% shot for the Viking's kicker. But they were caught with 12 men in the huddle, a 5 yard penalty, that made the chance of making the FG, a 55-yard attempt, much more unlikely (probably a 10% chance). Thus Farve attempted the risky pass that got intercepted.
Here's the irony: the “too many men in the huddle” penalty is a result of the Fran Tarkenton Vikings in the 1970s. Before it was illegal to do so, Fran Tarkenton would have 14 men in the huddle, thus the defending team didn't know if the Vikings were going to use their running experts or their pass receiving experts until the very last second when the extra three guys left the field. The 14-man huddle was so brilliant and diffficult to defend against that the NFL made it illegal to have more than 11 men in the huddle.
Now it's come back to bite the Vikings in the butt.
This kind of sounds like the the Democrats the day after Scott Brown won.
They are amusing... Saints are going to the Superbowl because they won the game, period.
I agree he is one tough SOB. I give him alot of credit for never missing a game. However, I do not agree with the “walk on water” attitude that the media has for him.
